Force choice of renderer without converting files?
I know the Kobo uses separate renderers for epub and kepub files. What I'm wondering is if there's a way to manually choose which renderer is used regardless of file extension.

No, there isn't. For sideloaded books, the choice is based on the file name. If the file name ends in ".kepub.epub", the kepub renderer is used. And simply renaming the file is enough to trigger the use of the kepub renderer. But, it isn't enough. The kepub renderer uses a different reading position system than the epub renderer. The spans are needed for this. Without them, the closest that the reading position will stored is the start of a chapter.
