Smashwords "id" issue

A recent ebook will not pass Smashwords flight check due to an id issue, and now older books that USED to be fine, are no longer passing (when a typo is fixed) due to the same issue.

Any ideas what's going on? The error message is:

Error while parsing file 'value of attribute "id" is invalid; must be an XML name without colons'. (ERROR)

I think ids need to start with an alpha character [a-z]. Might that be your problem?
