Kepub/epub font size problem and best GloHD firmware today?
Hello dear Mobileread!
Long time lurker. I own two Kobo Glo HD's and to this day, I only modified the SD card size, from 4GB to 32GB and loaded it with epubs. I'm currently using version 4.6.9995. Recently, I tried converting some epubs to kebpus using Kepubify, and while it did work, I noticed my font is at least 30% smaller on kepubs, than on epubs. Is there any way of fixing this? I don't want to convert all books to kepubs, I just want to have both epubs and kebpus, with same font size. Also, what's the best Glo HD version for today? The best optimized, battery life one? I'm perfectly happy with 4.6.9995, should I upgrade at all? ![]() ![]() |

I tried taking a picture with my phone camera, but they look pretty similar. However there's a clear difference, the new version GloHD is absolutely warmer! It appears a bit dimmer too |

Sorry for double posting (didn't know I could edit the post, I learned now), I took some pictures and while they look equal, I can assure you there's a noticable difference which is really bothering me in real life. I'm 100% certain they were absoulutely identical before the firmware upgrade.
Here's one picture at 100% brightness, https://i.imgur.com/bvOqeSb.jpeg and one at 20% brightness. https://i.imgur.com/EQxMteq.jpeg You can go into Photoshop/gimp and use the color picker to test the colors, and you'll see the right one is more vibrant and brighter - which is noticable in real life too. Also it's less warm, and it's a real nice pure white, whilst the left one is a little bit warm now, and it's really bothering me. EDIT: Fixed images. EDIT: The difference is pretty evident when the picture is scaled to a smaller size, see: ![]() Last edited by A random blob; 09-06-2020 at 08:21 PM. Reason: Grammar stuff |

Looking with Photoshop's eyedropper tool, with averaging set to 101x101 pixels to even out the E-Ink graininess, I can see no different in the 20% brightness, and possibly a tiny bit less blue on the 100% brightness, but it's really so small I can't be sure it's not operator bias.

Did you get the patches applies so the font size is the same with ePub and KePub?

I can see the difference in the photos clearly. Very strange, never heard about such a thing before.

Hi people. I'm not sure what the difference is, I compared them again under different lights and under sun light they look about the same. However it's definetely dimmer than before, that's probably it.
To be honest, I got used to it by now. Quote:
Thanks a lot JSWolf. The UI took some time getting used to, but it all worked out in the end ![]() ![]() |

There a kepub output plugin you can install to Calibre to 'convert' your epubs into Kepub, and have them neatly kept in the same Calibre database,, but there is a *huge* caveat here. Ebooks processed this way, by the design of the of the Calibre software, has to go through Calibre's 'anything to html to ebook' conversion process. That *will* make changes to the books, and unless you are very familiar with the default settings, can make a mess of things. Alternatively, there is a stand-alone utility to batch convert epubs to Kepubs. Ufortunately, I don't know of an easy way to automatically re-integrate them with Calbire database for easy loading to device. Keeping a copy of the Kepubs can make things faster if you find yourself sending large batches of books to a Kobo device, but considering the hassle involved, I think Jwolf's advice is best.. don't bother. (Unless, you have e-book conversion settings you want applied only to Kepubs but not your epub copies.) |
