Unhappy Kobo Glo help, PLEASE

Hi, I am totally new to ereaders and a dear friend gave me one to try. It is a Kobo Glo N613, but unfortuantely it does not want to work. She had troubles with it a few months after she got it and instead of trouble shooting or returning, she set it aside and went back to her original one. Fast forward a year later and she gave it to me to have if I can fix it.

It's in a never ending loop of updating. I have done several hard resets, soft resets, etc. It won't recognize that it is hooked up to a computer when in the updating mode. (i have tried different usb ports and cords)

I recently let the battery totally die out and then it did allow me to set it up to the computer and sync - then it took my wifi password and it said it needed more battery to update - plugged it in and it instantly went back to the updating screen where it freezes and never comes out of.

repeat

Am I SOL? Kobo support was basically useless and told me to bad so sad.

You can flash the ROMs of those things. Sounds recoverable to me, but I don't know a lot about it.

What do you mean by these two types of resets? Is one a factory reset or are you just pushing the pinhole-reset button?

The device must be running the firmware and in the appropriate mode to be seen by the computer. If everything was OK, when you plugged it in, it would ask whether you wanted to connect. And only when you said yes would the computer see the device.

That makes me think the battery is no good. Li-Ion cells stop holding charge after a while. And leaving a device with a Li-Ion battery in it for a while without recharging is a good way to damage them. If this is the case, then it will be useless unless you replace the battery.

Another possibility is the internal micro SD card. It could be failing or corrupt. Restoring an image as @Pajamaman suggested is a good idea. If you restore to a new card and it still doesn't work, then the device is probably dead. In that case, you can offer it for sale somewhere as people do want replacement screens.
