Angry I lost one book that I bought on KOBO, you can be the next one

I bought a book 5 years ago from KOBO and the book is gone now.

When I asked Kobo about my issue they just said:
"I apologize for this inconvenience, but unfortunately this item is no longer available on our platform, perhaps the author or publisher took it out from our platform."

Their option was to give me my money back as KOBO credit, that I don't want, I just want my book back.

Also KOBO is still selling the same book (with some small changes) with a different publisher....

Thank You KOBO???

Buy the book again with the credit they gave you?

This is why you should always keep backups of your files and never rely on cloud storage that's under other peoples’ control. As the article you linked says:

Quote:
[U]nless you’ve taken the time to download each title you purchase to stream—Amazon recommends you do this “promptly after your purchase” in its Instant Video Terms of Use, by the way—your access to that film depends on a variety of factors, all of which are outside of your control.
It’s unfortunate that you lost it, but at least you learned the lesson with just one book rather than a whole collection. And now you know to be careful about that going forward!

Yes, this will be the easiest decision.
But, what warranty I get for the "new" book, (that is double in price than the first one) how I can be sure it will not disappear as the first one ... we are just feeding a very hungry monster...

Sorry, I'm new here and I don't know exactly how this forum really work, with my last post I was trying to reply to Deskisamess.

Don't rely on someone else keeping it around. Make sure you download a copy in an accessible format and keep it, and that (as you should be doing anyway with all your files) you keep good backups.

Then it doesn't matter if Kobo stops carrying it, you still have it.

Always a surprise to people, but unlike Amazon, who must have it in their contracts, Kobo and B&N don't necessarily keep a book available if the publisher withdraws it even though you paid for it. Your only recourse is to get a refund. That is why everybody on this board, downloads, removes DRM and stores their purchases in Calibre. Many of us have been there and done that, losing many more books.

I actually have about 30 books on Audible that are no longer sold, yet they remain in my account. That's why I think Amazon has something in their contracts about that.

Yep. This is also why I buy Blu-rays and redeem digital copies instead of just buying digital directly.

I go one step further. I rip the movies to my HDs to keep fingerprints off the discs (one family member in particular is a complete slob when it comes to handling discs), and then we can stream the movies to any TV in the house. And those rips are also backed up, plus having the original Blu-Ray in a safe spot as well as the digital copy, usually on Vudu. Doing that is especially good for when the internet is down for hours.

And of course, every ebook I've ever owned, even if I've gotten it as a freebie from Amazon, has the DRM stripped, and backed up onto several drives for safe-keeping. I don't trust that any store will keep a copy for me forever, not even Amazon.

I'd hate to think how much money I have invested in all my ebooks over the years, there's no way I'd risk losing them. Hard drive storage is now the cheapest way to back up your books, plus ebooks really don't take up much space. You can't rely on any business to remain around forever or to keep your digital purchases safe for you.

Cool The book is back

It is so funny, the book is back on my original Ipad, without doing a thing on the Ipad, and just after a few hours after I've started this thread. It is a real "miracle" because the Kobo support guys were telling me (in many emails over more than a week) they can't do a thing to get the book back...
Of course, I can't open the book on my new Ipad...so when my old device will die my book will be gone.

Thank you Mobileread!

I have a lot of books from Kobo that they no longer sell, or now sell a different edition. And I can download every single one of them. In fact, the book I am currently reading is one of them. It was withdrawn from sale some time last year because the author changed publisher, and I downloaded it to my Aura H2O this week to read and later to the Kobo app on my phone. And checking now, I can still directly download the epub version.

Have you looked for the book in the library on the Kobo site? If so, you should be able to download the epub version and keep that.

Some day I'm going to have time to figure out how to do this. I figured out the ebooks, even when I was download them as Palm Digital Editions. I finally figured out the Audible method a few years ago (although I'm very behind on my backups).

But I've never figured out DVDs or Blu-Rays.

That is why you backup the book in Calibre.
