The Other Side of the Moon: The Life of David Niven by the late British broadcaster and drama critic Sheridan Morley (Wikipedia), who hosted a number of long-running shows for the BBC and briefly had a theatre biography prize named for him, is his show business celebrity biography of the late British actor (Wikipedia) who starred in many classic films (and was apparently author Ian Fleming's first pick to play James Bond and later namedropped in one of the series' novels), drawing upon specially-conducted interviews with many of his colleagues as well as members of his family, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Dean Street Press.

This was originally published in 1985 by Weidenfeld & Nicolson, and has previously been offered free in 2016.

Sheridan Morley wrote this biography of the consummate on-screen English gentleman after speaking to over 150 of Niven’s friends and colleagues (only Rex Harrison refused). The result is a picture which both supports and contradicts the charming vagabond persona depicted in Niven’s own bestselling memoirs.

While millions throughout his life were enchanted by Niven’s happy-go-lucky charisma and world-class anecdotage, he was in many respects a private figure, haunted by a fear of failure, and a victim of several key tragedies in his personal life. Morley’s biography is a warm, appreciative but perceptive account which captures both sides of one of Hollywood’s most enduringly lovable figures.
