Advice on new eBook device

A long, sad story, but I just bricked my 2012 Kindle Paperwhite during an attempted battery change. A big battery icon appeared on the screen when I pulled the old battery and became a blank "band" across the screen after I installed the new one and charged it Nothing removes the band.

I'm now shopping for a new device. I don't know if I want another Paperwhite or a tablet and would like any advice you may have.

I used my PW for a lot of personal documents. I would highlight text and add a note, then connect the PW to my computer and open the .txt file "My CLippings.txt" and then copy the noted text to a Word.docx as a kind of book report. I would then email to my Kindle and have to available on my PW. Can I do the same with a tablet?

Do iPads have a Kindle Documents folder like the PW once you install the Kindle App? Can I move unprotected eBooks into it via USB.

I'm struggling here. I had all of my operations down pat with the Paperwhite, but hated the experimental browser and don't want to just jump into buying another one.

Thanks for any replies!

I don't have a real answer to your question except to let you know that you don't have access to the Ipad file system. I doubt it'll work for you in that way. There may be a way to get to the clippings.txt file but I suspect there isn't unless it's provided by the Kindle app itself. Maybe they have a way to export clippings.

You can access your clippings on Amazon's site, I think. I don't recall the details of that but I seem to remember that it's possible. I don't make many notes so it's not something I've really dealt with much.

If you want to switch to a tablet for reading and you're mostly concerned with personal documents you might be able to use another app. I sold my last Ipad a few years ago so I can't help with that but on Android you could use Moon+ reader to read your documents and it'll save your notes in a variety of forms, including HTML and some others. You can store your books on Dropbox and access them from Moon+ and I think even save notes back to Dropbox. I'm not sure of that last part but I think I remember seeing that. In any case you can save and share notes.

There are other apps and probably some of them will do the same things. I'm familiar with Moon+ so that's the one I mentioned.

If you're concerned that Kindles are fragile or the batteries don't last a long time, that's not the case. I live in a retirement home and I'm a gadget freak and I've had a lot of them and I'm always helping my neighbors with their Kindles. These things last a very long time and they're very reliable.

Barryem, thank you very much for your time in replying! I'm lost without my Kindle PW and spent most of yesterday analyzing devices (I'm retired too). I found out that I needed the Kindle file system to do what I want to do, so it was a tossup between Kindle models. Nothing in the Oasis or Voyager persuaded me enough, so I bought another Kindle Paperwhite.

No, I'm not concerned about Paperwhites. I had the original, 2012, Gen 5 for 5 years and never had a problem with it except the browser.......... The battery still lasted several days with my use being 2-3 hrs/day. I wanted it to last another 5 years and attempted a battery change. The unfortunate thing was the battery change actually went well, but ended up making my Kindle unreadable for some reason. As I am an engineer, I know that solid state electronics do NOT like to have power removed for whatever reason!

Sorry to hear this. I'm thinking about replacing a battery on my oldest Kindle Touch (not really necessary yet) so when that happens I now know to be doubly careful. It seems like resetting the device should be able to fix something like this? Or maybe going to Page Refresh option and turning that on? (I'm sure you've done everything – just curious why a screen won't refresh. I assume you can still load books?)

I absolutely have tried everything possible, restart, reset, refresh, reformat, and even including re-installing the latest software update. I also "image" my Kindle as a backup. I re-installed the image. No joy. It is a firmware/hardware screen issue that cannot be corrected due to having lost power when I removed the old battery. The large "battery" icon that appeared across my screen became a permanent "band" as shown below. The Kindle functions fine, except you cannot see under this band, which makes it worthless.

I suspect what happened to your Kindle is a fluke. I know a lot of people have changed batteries and this is the first problem I've heard about. I haven't had a need to change one till now. I have 4 Kindles but my Paperwhite 2 was bought refurbished and it's battery is only lasting a couple of days now, so I've been thinking of replacing it. I haven't really decided yet. I do have a Voyage and a Paperwhite 3 as well as a Paperwhite 1, so I don't really need it. I just feel guilty about leaving it abandoned.

I don't have many qualms about being able to do it successfully. I've watched a few videos showing how and it seems simple enough. Of course I realize anything can happen. The thing is I'm 77 now and I've never liked working on hardware. I was a programmer but these days I don't even have the patience to mess with software a whole lot.

It's about $45 to buy the battery from Newpower99. The Paperwhites will be $90 on Black Friday. And I don't really need it anyway. It's a tough choice.

Don't your personal documents get to your Kindle via the Amazon service? GEt the KIndle app and see if they exist there, if you already have an ipad? If you email them to yourself via your kindle email, it should be simple enough to open them in the KIndle app.

Made a highlight and a note in one of the books I have on board... this then goes into the Kindle Notebook which can be exported as flashcards (I guess if you have lots of notes) or emailed. Presumably you can email to your Kindle address, or any other and then those notes/that notebook would become available in your personal documents section. However, the notes in the email are in html format so will be readable by a browser and presumably can then be copied as part of your book report. Its a bit clunky, to my mind, but its doable.

I have kind of the same problem as yours. I want to sync with iOS device everything possible, my notes, contacts and calendars. But on the other hand side I think maybe it's better to buy just a reader, so that other stuff didn't disturbed me while reading.

A couple of tips, even though I failed........

1) There is a 11th screw in the center top, covered with the black, sticky tape they used to seal the benzel. Dig it out and remove. Several videos only show 10 screws.

2) You can get an identical battery from eBay, shipped free from the USA for $9.99 complete with the same tools. There was nothing wrong with the new battery I bought and it was identical to what I took out. Putting the original battery back in didn't solve the "band" issue.

By the way, I did start the replacement with a fully charged Kindle with the screen off. I had no way of knowing the charge condition of the new battery, but it did charge up fine once installed.

3) I can't remember how long I had the original battery out, but if I had to do it again I would greatly minimize that time with a well planned "quick swap""!!!

Thanks for the tip. If I do decide to replace it I'll keep this in mind.

In the past when I've had to have batteries replaced I've gone on Ebay and found a replacement service and I've always had good results with that. I've done a few myself but I really never liked doing it. Unfortunately this time I didn't find any such services.
