Maximum Library's
Trying to go through all my library's from multiple sources to weed out the redundant ones. However in order to do this i need to connect an embarrassing amount of old folders. All these library's are in different locations so it's important to have them all linked to Calibre (portable) so i can have them alphabetically next to each other for easy comparison. However it seems that I am unable to quick switch to half of them because there is just so much space in the quick switch sub-menu.
I attached screenshots of the quick-switch menu, but also a screenshot of the connected library's to show how many are not being seen in the quick-menu. Please don't judge me for the amount of library's I have collected. I am trying to work through them all.....note each screen has the number of library's at the bottom. Library Breeder- Remember? Any suggestions? Last edited by Rellwood; 10-23-2017 at 04:48 PM. |

Why not just merge them and then weed out duplicates?

Can't merge them since they have actual DB files and I can't tell which ones are better. They are always going to be separate library's since each db is slightly different.
I do come across straight up copies and delete them before adding them. I can tell by the db size and I compare them using Directory Opus. As it is I have been going through each one, quickly determining if I want it, then moving it to another location all together, then removing it from Calibre. Makes room for the new library's. I really just want to keep the metadata (dates, tags, etc), so I am going to end up creating csv catalogs, but until I weed through them, I can't do anything |

Hmmm... I would copy all the books from separate libraries to one temporary library and then compare them there. Possibly I would tag them before copying (like, books from the library "old kindle" get the tag "old kindle"). So I can tell which library they originally were from. Copying via Calibre GUI retains all the metadata.
Of course this solution might not suit you. Last edited by Sirtel; 10-23-2017 at 05:15 PM. Reason: I meant copying using Calibre GUI, not the file explorer |

1st set Preferences: adding Books: (adding Actions tab) (Tick) Auto merge: Create New record for each duplicate FORMAT (A Mobi and EPUB will merge. 2 EPUB willnot) The select a group of books in 1 : right click: Copy to Library: <Destination> (I prefer small batches. YMMV ) If fields are different, Calibre offers to create Then use the Find Duplicates PI along with the viewer to choose which to delete |

Since you're already using Calibre portable, you might install multiple copies and divide up your libraries into easier to manage groups. Sometimes you might need to close one copy of Calibre and start a different copy instead of just switching libraries, but it will allow you to reduce your number of libraries showing in the quick switch.

The real problem seems the mass of books in the libraries with more or less identical content. And this will go even more problematic with every day lost not make a break with this kind of management. If he really want to get rid of this this situation he need to stop this kind of management.
I would suggest to conflate the libraries in one library. Doing this without loosing information in an uncontrolled way use a custom field/column in each library that identify the source library (e.g. Lib A, Lib B...). This field will take care that data sets won't merged together during the import. After all books are imported you can use this field to identify your work sets and as well as status information for your clean up process over the time. In addition you will be able generate to every time a single subset like your old libraries as physical or virtual library by using this field in a search rule. Define the field as comma separated text like tags and you will be able to assign a book to more than one library / status and what ever else you need during the cleanup process. In addition you can take a look to some of DaltonST's plugins too. He have some really powerful tools (depending on how experienced you are in defining search constructs with database tools like SQL). |

Use the Find Duplicates plugin.
