Best KPW firmware
I have a Kindle Paperwhite 1. I have been using it for quite a while and was interesting in upgrading and adding to the hacks I have installed. I love the work that so many have put into this forum and have been appreciating it from the background for a long time. So I'm wondering, what firmware should I have installed on my KPW? I have upgraded to 5.6.1 and learned how to use MRPI to install some of the more popular packages, but I haven't seen how to install some of the other ones. So what improvments do the various firmwares have? Should I just roll back to 5.3.3 and lock it in? I have looked online and not been able to find a firmware feature history so I can't tell when Amazon did something worthwhile and when they were just messing up what the developers have created. Is there a concise list of firmware vs feature list? I realize this is much subject to opinions, but I'll still ask. What is the best firmware to have on my KPW and why?

There is no such list.
Stay with 5.6.1.1 Because it is the last firmware version released by Amazon for your model and contains the code required to communicate using modern Internet protocols. |

@Escape314: The best is the one that suites your particular needs. Some people value using Collections Manager and having "nested collections" (which are not available starting with fw 5.4.x) more than having "cloud connections" (= sync of collections between devices) or having pop-up footnotes. Some prefer to have custom font appear as options in Aa menu more then to havie to override existing option(s) via Fonts hack. That was also last available with firmware 5.3.9.
It all depends on things like do your mostly read books from Kindle Store or do you convert & sideload 100% of your books.. do you read only on one device or multiple. Is it ok if your Kindle will not be able to connect to Amazon servers if you decide to stay with older unsupported firmware. |
