Hyphenation not according Dutch rules

My experience is that Dutch text in kepubs is not hyphenated according to the Dutch hyphenation rules. For example, it says stofz-uiger, instead of stof-zuiger (which is one word for vacuum cleaner in Dutch).

I really have no clue how to fix this, but I really would like to because for me its a mayor disturbance while reading.

Cheers!

Firmware version 3.16.0 has fixes for hyphenation. The changes were for all languages. Hopefully it fixes the problems with Dutch.

As 3.16.0 was not released for the H2O, you have a choice of manually installing if from one of the other firmware packages, or waiting for the next release. Kobo don't preannounce any releases, so we don't now when it will be.

If you don't want to wait, you can download the firmware from this thread and follow the instructions for updating manually. (Make sure you download the correct version for your Kobo!) This is how I've installed all the updates on my Aura HD and haven't had any problems at all.

At average, how long does it take for firmware updates to reach devices?

Because updating it manually, I already got stuck at #2, downloaing the archive file, which file exactly?

Can be a month or more depending on what problems are found. Sometimes have to wait for another version fixing show stopping problems.

Oddly, neither Koreader, Coolreader, or FBReader have a hyphenation file for Dutch. They do have most of the other Germanic languages covered, including Danish, Icelandic, and Finnish.

I didn't see Dutch listed for the "Hyphenate This!" calibre plugin But, I seem to remember someone having a success adding a Dutch hyphen file with this method.

Luck;
Ken

So the problem won't be fixed when 3.16 arrives?

I don't think Finnish is a Germanic language.

You are probably correct, I should have used Swedish or Norwegian. As for the next Kobo firmware update fixing something like that, I haven't a clue. I don't use the stock readers, so I am not that interested in how a firmware effects them.

Koreader has it hyphen files in "koreader/data/hyph". There are two types of files: pdb and pattern. pdb-files seem to have been inherited with coolreader. pattern-files add the languages Spanish and Greek and are modifications of Latex hyphen files. Latex also has no Dutch hyphenation files.

@Ken Could you remember where someone was succesful in installing a Dutch hyphen file? Maybe I could use the file to add Dutch hyphenation to koreader.

Edit: I found the tex file! It's here.

EDIT 2: I've added Dutch.pattern to my koreader fork and created a pull request.

@Ken. Thanks!

That's the old one, however, without UTF-8 encoding. Creates an extra mess with the definitions for accented vowels.

You gave me the right idea, though.

That was fast. How does it work on your device, the uncracked one? There has been a number of NL posters looking for it.

Luck;
Ken

My guess would be that the "Exceptions list" gets checked first and the words would break at the dash. Words not on the list follow the pattern's rules.

I added this to the Koreader Android thread.

I know how it works in Latex. I just have no idea how it could be implemented in koreader.
