Searches on Mac and iPad produce wildly different results

I'm using the calibre server. The search results displayed on the iPad are also mostly unrelated books.

You have presumably resticted what column unprefixed searches search in the calibre program (Preferences->Searching). Either run the server from within calibre to have the same restrictions when searching there, or use prefixes, or copy the calibre config folder to the computer you are runnig the server on, so that the same preferences are used htere.
