Metadata errors after updating to Calibre 3.6

Hi,

First of all great app, have been using it for many years

Now to my problem - I have just upgraded to v3.6 64 bit on Windows 10 Creators Update. Calibre opens normally, I can add and removed books OK. However, when I try to edit medata I get the attached error with the following details:

I have restarted the PC, excluded my Calibre book directory from my anti-virus software, but still the same problem, and I ca'nt find anyhting that would be holding anything open, especially after a reboot. It worked fine in the previous version - does anyone have any suggestions?

It's working fine for me in the same environment (64-bit Calibre on the current build of Windows 10). I know that's of no help to you, but it suggests a problem specific to your PC rather than something more generic.)

do you have a standalone Content server or book viewer running? (I suspect not, because you rebooted and issue persisted)

Permissions on the Library or book folders?

No 'cloud sync' active on the Library (or temp ) folders?

No content server, book viewer or any sort of cloud sync. I've checked the permissions and they are all fine (full access for my user). Strangely I've also noticed I can no longer drag and drop books into Calibre, but I can get them in using the "add Books" button. Also, bizarrely if I redo a "download metadata and covers" after the first one has failed, it seems to work. However as you can see from the debug log no errors seem to appear for this process:

I've also tried creating a new library in a different location, uninstalling Calibre and installing a previous version (v2.85.1) with no change - I don't know what's going on, and I can't work out exactly when it stopped working as I haven't used it for a few weeks. One last thing, I also tried removing the most recent Windows security update in case that had caused a problem but no joy.

Pulling my hair out at the moment trying to work out what has caused this?

Typically drag and drop not working is caused by running calibre as administrator instead of a normal user.

Your symptoms all indicate something on your computer is interfering with calibre. THe most likely culprit is security/antivirus programs.

Thanks kovidgoyal, that fixed my drag and drop issue. I'll try disabling my AV and see if that could be causing the other problem.

OK, just an update - turns out the initial problem was caused by a new feature of the Sophos Home Beat AV I am trialing.

For those interested, through process of elimination I identified that it was "Configure - Advanced - Risk Reduction - Prevent DLLs loading from untrusted folders". Once this was turned off, all was good again. As I prefer to leave as much turned on, under "Configure - Antivirus - File and folder exceptions" I added the Calibre Library location, the AppData\Roaming\calibre\ location and the Calibre install location. Once these were added I turned on the Risk reduction setting again and all worked as expected.
