PW3: How to stop a software update in progress?

I've successfully blocked software updates for some time - and now my Kindle's software is updating. Any way to stop this at this point?

I have to assume that your update is already finished at this point, they only take a couple minutes.

If it's not already finished, what do you mean when you say it is in progress?

Not finished yet, I kept pressing the switch/reset button while doing on-line research

'In progress' means that the Software Update screen is shown.

oh boy, ok, so it has the screen like "your kindle software is updateing" with a progress bar , and you hold down the switch to get it to reboot before it finishes the update?

I just tried installing one on mine, and honestly I could not figure out a way to stop it. I am tying one more thing.

The update goes in two phases.

The first part the progerss bar will move very slowly, very small steps, for about an inch.
This is the part that is processing and checking the update.

The second part, the progress bar will start moving more smoothly, fillingup the rest of the bar. This is the process where the update is actually being installed.

I rebooted in both phases, and had no luck clearing out the update.

The problem is that once that update file is registered on the system, the linux kernel on the kindle goes to do that work before starting up anything else.

Also once the update gets to that smooth phase, you will be half updated, and have corrupt files, until you let it finish all the way.

If it has gotten that far, I would recommend you let it finish now, but there are a few other people that check in this time of day, if you want a second opinion.

Yes. And I do know this may sound totally stupid. I just hoped there would be anything I could do at this point... even though it doesn't look like that. It's probably too late ;(.

If you can think of a way to change even one bit of the update file, the signed checksum will fail and the entire update process will fail.

Meanwhile, peel off the bezel, unscrew the rear of the case, remove battery.
That will at least be fun doing with one hand while repeatedly re-booting the device.

I put a large text in my previous post, but knc1 is right - if you want to stop the update, you can peel off the front bezel, unscrew about 10 screws, pull the screen out, and unplug the battery :-)

Unfortunately, when you put the battery back in, it will still try the same update file!

At that point, you are in the territory of being able to hook up the serial port, and you would in fact be able to stop the update that way.

I think its safe to say at this point you have two options.

1. Disassemble the kindle to pull the battery, there's always a small chance you can damage it doing this, but lots of people here have done it without breaking thier device - I don't think pulling the battery is more likely to cause file damage any more thn the reboots you have already done.

2. Let the update finish. Take a deep breath and tell yourself "It's ok, Maybe the new one will come out this year, and I can jailbreak that one

Are you looking to prevent updates for a specific reason?

Well, I had two reasons to prevent updates:
- the first one will probably sound ridiculous

, but I liked the old (5.6.*) look, interface etc. MUCH better,
- the second one: I wanted to jailbreak my device, and ironically enough, after all that time I was planning to do that this weekend

for the UI, I get it. It took me a long time to get used to the new one.

As for the jailbreak, I'm trying to find a new one, and a few other people are too, but I'm not very good at it.

Oh, I hate the new UI so much! That's so ironic I''ll have not even one but two PW3s with it now (long story, a new PW3 got shipped yesterday).

And what's even more ironic, I've stayed pretty much away from MR for a dozen of months or so, so I wasn't aware of a one-year-old nice working soft & easy jailbreak until yesterday... and haven't jailbroken my old PW3 when it was still perfectly jail-breakable (which was the case until two hours ago). Arrgh!

It is not all that bad, there are only about 12 screws that need to be unscrewed, and then you are also unscrewed.
