several questions...
Hi all.
I'm thinking of getting a new e reader. I bought 7 years ago a Sony prs t1. Read hundreds of books on it , very happy ![]() It ended on the bottom of our pool... That was 2016 I think or 2015 .... I got a Kindle paper white new from amazon which was ok , I had to transfer my books on my hdd (pc) to mobi , not hard I use Calibre. That kindle was chewed by my Pyrenees dog...after that I bought cheap on eBay a second hand Sony prs t1 , which blocks when I use dictionary.. So I'm in the market for a new one. I read that the new kindle paper white pushes ads on your screen (wow.....their crazy)... And that Kobo doesn't translate if the book isn't bought from them.. I read the last year in French to improve my french so I need ,lets say every 3-4 pages the translate button. All help welcome. Which reader would you recommend ? I don't buy books as I still have a ton left on my hdd all epub format. My kindle was always in fly mode. |

Sony got out of the ereader business in 2014, their last model was the PRS-T3. I wouldn't advise buying a Sony Reader second hand with a battery in unknown condition.
If you liked the Kindle PW, I would advise buying the PW3. It's cheap and very good. You can buy the "Special Offers" model, which will display ads only when the device is in sleep mode and save you $20 or pay the full price and avoid the ads. |

That isn't correct. The dictionaries, whether they are single language or translation dictionaries, will work with sideloaded epubs. There is no difference in the function of the dictionaries for sideloaded or purchased books. If there ever was a difference, it changed a long time ago.

If you really like the Sony and are in the US, they can be had cheaply. I know, battery life can be questionable, but I've bought all my Sonys secondhand and they're all still going strong. Most of them I've paid around $20 for. Worth a little risk to me.

Kindles are sold at a $20 discount if you accept the ads and at full price if you don't want ads. Another, equally valid way to look at that is that you have to pay an extra $20 to get ads removed from your Kindle. Both are true. Both are trivial.
I've ordered all my Kindles without ads. There aren't ever any ads on my Kindle. For those who don't care the ads consist of a screen saver ad when it's turned off and, I think, a small ad on the home page, and that's it. I've never actually seen those ads but I'm pretty sure I've read that. Barry |

If you were to buy a Kobo, your ePub eBooks would not need to be converted.
But if you really do want a Kindle, don't convert to Mobi as Mobi is a very obsolete format and you could lose formatting. Convert to KF8 (AZW3) which is similar to ePub. |

You'd still be better off with a Kobo than a Kindle. Given that you had a T1, a Kobo keeps your books as is. A Kindles changes them.

One recent horrible example was a book of poetry where every poems was aligned on the page by a mix of <head> declared and inline styles and every line had it's inline styles to align the words and set font sizing -- all using absolute measurements -- pixels and points should be banned. Rather pretty on a 600x800 epub ereader but when the owner of the ereader updated to a Kindle PW3 with higher resolution and did a format conversion using Calibre, it was a dog's breakfast. On my KA1, it wasn't quite as bad but so much wasted space since I was basically looking at a 600x800 box in the upper left corner. A bit of work with Sigil (blessed be the name of RemoveInlineStyles together with regex and global search/replace batting cleanup ![]() |

If you don't know how to configure Calibre properly or format shift/fix KF8, then you could have a mess on your hands. It's not worth the hassle if you don't know Calibre well enough.
