Nook Simple Touch will suddenly not work in Windows10

Hi there,

If this post this in the wrong forum, feel free to direct me elsewhere.

I have this issue today. The situation is that I wanted to transfer a book from Calibre to my Nook Simple Touch as I have done so many times before. But something went wrong today. I got an error message about failing communication. Nothing was reported faulty until I tried to transfer the book, which is why I'm lead to believe that it's Calibre which does something.

Anyway, now Windows reports errors on my device when I connect it. It can not repair these errors. I tried all sorts of things. Copying the file manually doesn't work, since windows reports "no room available". It happens on both the internal memory and the sd-card. The sd-card is reported as faulty on Windows as well. Turning it off and on again *sigh* didn't do anything. Neither did a reboot. I can't format the device on Windows either, which is probably a good thing in most cases.

I tried a factory reset, but something goes wrong when connecting to B&N for the deactivation. And when the deactivation goes wrong, the reset will not complete.

And now the weird thing: I found a laptop I have which runs Ubuntu and installed Calibre on that. I formatted the Nook on Ubuntu (without issue) and restarted it, and now everything worked. I could transfer books, I could read the books. Huzzah! Or so I thought. Because as soon as I plug it back in to my Windows PC, the problems are exactly the same as before , and I still can't copy books to the Nook from Windows explorer either.

Just to make matters worse I thought at that point that it was my Nook which was to blame. So I tried my wife's Nook (same exact model), and now I messed that up as well. Exactly the same symptoms too.

I'm running latest version of Calibre 3.3.0 on windows (disabling all plugins was tried, of course). The one I downloaded on Ubuntu which works is version 2.55. I wonder if that's the deciding factor?

Windows 10 Pro with all the latest updates, bells and whistles in terms of updates and patches.

...and of course a pair of now slightly paperweighty Nook Simple Touch

Any and all suggestions are very appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I can't tell from that report if you have rebooted the Windows machine or not. I get an occasional problem with my laptop were it won't see my Kobo device properly. Sometimes restarting the device will work, and sometime using a different USB port works but these tend to stop working as well. To get the USB ports working again, I have to reboot the laptop.

Thanks for your suggestion. Yep. Rebooting is always a good idea. I tried that quite a few times. I have also tried to plug into a different Windows PC altogether, and that one also reports that there are errors on my device and it also fails to repair them.

I just downloaded the latest firmware 1.2.1. The Nook was running it already, but I thought I'd try to update it anyway. After that was done, Windows reported the same error still, but I was able copy books to the device and read them.

This morning I can still read the books, but now windows doesn't register the Nook at all when I plug it in, regardless of which usb port I use. The Nook itself knows that it's plugged in. It switches to USB-mode and is charging.

As a side note: All my other USB-units are working. Mouse, Keyboard, WiFi-dongle, sketchpad, external harddisks, etc. Plugging the Nook into a different USB-port (e.g. one where a functining harddisk has it's normal place) doesn't change anything either.

It kind of bothers me, that the same exact thing happened at roughly the same time, when I performed the exact same operation (transferring files from Calibre). And it bothers me even more that I don't know what conclusion to draw from it.

Was the other Windows machine also running Windows 10? And are they the same release and updates? There were some problems with the Kobo ereaders and some other devices when the Win10 Anniversary Edition was released last year. This was because Kobo was doing something with unused sectors that Microsoft decide was bad. This has been fixed on both side since, but there may have been another update that did something else. Testing with a Windows 7 or 8 machine would help to see if this was the case.

Also, what is the error that Windows reports? Is it a disk error, or something else?

The other one is running Windows 10 as well, but that one is my work pc, running the Enterprise edition.

The error message is the (I will try to translate from Danish) "There are problems with this drive. Scan the drive now, and solve the problem"

And when I click repair, I get the "The drive could not be repaired. Close this dialog and try the repair again" message. I can keep trying for as long as I want.

I have managed to get in contact with the Nook again, via some random turn off/on and plug in/out. So I have that going for me at least.

What sometimes works now, is that I delete all the files on it from Windows Explorer, and run the repair tool. Sometimes it will report that no errors are found. Then I turn it off and on again, after which it re-creates its file structure, this will allow me to copy books to the main memory. But the next time I plug it in, the problem will be back.

As I hint in the problem above, I can ignore the error and then open the Nook in windows explorer. I can then see the files. I can also delete the files. But I can't copy new files to it, without doing as described above, and usually not without trying this procedure a couple of times before it sticks.

It sounds very plausible that a Windows update could be to blame for this. I think it's fair to narrow it down to a Windows issue or a Calibre issue, since the exact same thing happened to both of our Nooks at the same time.

You need to do a factory reset of your Nook and let the Nook reformat the sd card.

You will probably need to change you B&N password. I had a similar issue with my Nook and my Linux P.C. ie it would not work with the Linux pc but would work with my windows 10 tab. It unregistered/deactivated ok but would not register until I change my password. It took two reset cycles to finally get it to work with the Linux pc

As a best practice I have found that putting the Nook to sleep before doing usb transfers seems work faster and better with less problems than leaving it awake.

Thanks. It works. For now, at least.

The error I got was AD1133, which I found out means something like "We're no longer operating in your area, so we closed the server you're trying to connect to. Good luck and goodbye".

I found a guide to do a hard reset instead:

http://heeed.net/resetting-a-nook-simple-touch/

It's a bit of an adventure, but it works perfectly. I'm no longer able to connect to B&N, but that became irrelevant quite some time ago anyway. I put the SD back in and formatted it from the device. And connected to PC. No errors. I can also transfer books from Calibre again and read them on my device. I have no idea about what went wrong yesterday. Now I'll see if I can do the same for my wife's Nook.

Thanks so much for the help and support, guys. I was just about ready to give up here.
