Calibre Annoyance in Nemo file manager
I am using Mint Linux 18.1 64-bit and when I open the Nemo file explorer to look at the files on my USB connected K4B, the file explorer givea me two banners across the top of the files listing that say:
"The media has been detected as "ebook reader" and has a Open Calibre prompt on it. I know when I want to start Calibre and don't need one of these reminders much less two of them that do the same thing. I have looked at the settings on Calibre and the Nemo file explorer and can seem to find anyplace to turn this behavior off. Anyone know how to this behavior off? Thanks for any help. WHat has this got to do with calibre? How your file manager chooses to decorate its displays is entirely under its control. calibre knows nothing about nemo.

I cannot find a setting in the file manager and I cannot find a setting in Calibre, so I am asking the Calibre experts if they know of anything.
Do you know if Calibre could be causing it? Or are you just wanting to criticize me for asking the question here? If I don't get an answer I will uninstall Calibre and see if that makes it go away... Jack |

Of course uninstalling calibre will make it go away. But that still won't make it a calibre issue. Installing a different file manager would probably make it go away too. As would modifying your xdg desktop file associations.

Kovid Goyal is the author of Calibre. What edition of Mint Linux 18.1 are you using? Cinnamon, KDE, Mate, or Xfce? How did you install Calibre? By running an install command from the Calibre installation page here? |

It installed calibre, calibre-bin, and the versions reported are 2.55.0+dfsg-1. When I run it Calibre reports itself as 2.55 I am fairly new to Linux (less than a year as a user) and DiapDealer's reply above sent me off to study "..xdg desktop file associations..." a little as I know nothing about that. I found a helpful page here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1658...iations-stored Ubuntu and Mint have a lot in common, I often find help with Mint in Ubunto related stuff. I looked in to the file associations using that link, in my /usr/share/applications folder I found the following files that might be associated with this: calibre-gui.desktop nemo-autorun-software.desktop nemo-autostart.desktop nemo.desktop And I opened those with gedit to see if I could find anything but there was nothing that was obvious to me. The content of the calibre-gui.desktop file is as follows: [Desktop Entry] Type=Application Name=calibre GenericName=E-book library management GenericName[de]=E-Book Bibliotheksverwaltung Comment=E-book library management Comment[es]=aplicación para la gestión de libros electrónicos Comment[de]=E-Book Bibliotheksverwaltung Exec=calibre %f Icon=calibre-gui Categories=Office;Database;FileTools;Viewer;Qt; MimeType=x-content/ebook-reader; If there is something in there that I can change I think I can do that... In most cases it's recommended not to install your distributions version of calibre but to install the official version. See http://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux

It is not a good idea to install Calibre from package manager. Make backup of Calibre configuration by making a copy of ~/.config/calibre directory. This should not be necessary, but better safe than sorry. Remove the package using Synaptic. Go to the Calibre download page and copy and paste the installation command. It will install much newer version of Calibre. For the vast majority of programs, the package manager or ports or whatever method native to Linux distribution is preferable to manual installation. Calibre is one of very few programs I prefer to install manually or directly from a author. This way you will get *much* newer packages and there will be no unwanted integration to Dolphin. There used to be a new version of Calibre every Friday. Nowadays it is, I think, every two weeks. No package maintainer will keep with this break-neck speed. I have been using Calibre on Mint Linux for many years and have been very happy with the setup. |

@ kacir,
You mentioned your long use and happiness with using Calibre so I looked at the page for your PocketBook 360 device to see if it is similar to my Kindle K4NT device. If I understand the manual for your reader right, it displays your book holdings on the PocketBook as files or folders containing one or more files. Is that correct? And to use it do you connect to a storage device or web site and download or copy books to your device? Again storing them in a files or folders and files system like is used in DOS or Windows? The reason I ask is because that is how I am trying to use the Kindle and it does not work very well. If you read the "detailed answer" info at this link it describes the metadata concept. Want to change folder structure or file names in the Calibre library? - https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=119175 Jack |

PocketBook and other selected readers support browsing hierarchical directories from the device, similar to PC or Android. Kindle only displays flat file list regardless of any elaborate file structure you create using Calibre. When I had Kindle PaperWhite 1 I have installed alternative reading software to the reader so I could use advanced text formatting and browse hierarchical directories with books. So with PocketBook and nowadays with my other e-ink readers I simply use "save to disk" functionality in Calibre and transfer the directory with books to the device via USB cable or using an SD card. I also use "create catalog" functionality in Calibre to create a list of books that I am exporting to a directory. This way you might be even be able to use Kindle flat file list. Export books to directory, transfer books to Kindle using Cable, transfer list of books in the form of catalog.mobi. Open Catalog, select a book and use search function in Kindle to locate the book in the loooong list of books. Or try to load alternative program to Kindle that can browse hierarchical directories. Be careful, do not load too many books to your Kindle at once. It will try to index the books and that might take a long time. There might be ways to prevent that but I do not follow development. This is just one of many issues with Kindle readers that make me prefer other brands. |

I really appreciate your giving me the details on that. I suspect that I would be happier with a eBook reader that used a traditional file/folders hierarchy for the files.
I don't buy any books from Amazon, for reading books I download from Gutenberg. I also listen to a lot of audiobooks (my cell phone is my player). I check audiobooks out of the local library. The checked out book that are not in *.mp3 format are ripped to the cell phone (Linux app Asunder) and the *.mp3 audio books are simply copied to it. I am hearing impaired (service related from a Navy career) and the VA provides me with hearing aids that have a bluetooth connection too. I can wear a device around my neck (Compilot II) and it will pipe the audiobooks from the cell phone and into my hearing aids. Very good quality audio and in stereo, I can listen to music too and pipe my TV set audio into my hearing aids also. I think the Kindle is not going to be around much longer and I appreciate the feedback I'm getting here. Jack |
