Looking at Kobo Aura One
As the title says, I'm looking at migrating from my Kindle paperwhite 2 to a Kobo Aura One.
On my Kindle I can but a book from Amazon, import it into calibre wich strips the drm and from there as it to my paperwhite device. Can I do this as easily with the kobo book store? To add to the complication I am doing it in Linux and at the moment don't need wine to do so. The threads and blood I have read seem to make it more complicated than setting up the de DRM plugin on caliber Erich is all I have had to do fur Kindle books. I know I can continue to buy from the Kindle store and convert them in calibre for use on any device but if like to try other stores. Linux send to be a limiting factor? Any pointers appreciated. the un-drm plugin will work, the problem is downloading the file, because you need some adobe-licenced software for that. I use my android phone when I don't want to boot windows. |

The problem is you have to jump through hoops to get ADE 2.0.1 to run under Wine.

Why not continue to buy books from Amazon? Do what you normally do, then convert to Kepub, then put on the Kobo.
My experience with the Kobo store has been disappointing when compared with Amazon. Last edited by Deskisamess; 06-06-2017 at 03:45 PM. |

I have ADE running on Wine. It's actually gotten a lot easier to install thanks to improvements in the winetricks script (an essential tool for any Wine user IMHO.) Just follow the directions on the AppDB and you'll be fine.

But you don't have to just buy from Kobo. You can buy from Google and any other shop that sells ePub. You can even borrow ePub from Overdrive. Also, not every eBook at Overdrive (US) has a Kindle version.

Thanks for the replies all. I can't seem to get ADE running on wine successfully. I had it running but when I downloaded a book from Google it wouldn't load. Think I'll stick to Amazon for the time as I know that works. I can always convert them in Calibre. The process of getting hold of an epub into ADE seems just to much trouble. Shame epub would be my format of choice.

What version of Linux are you running? What version of Wine? What version of ADE? I have tried various combinations on my Ubuntu Mate machines but it either won't run at all or crashes at some point in set up. Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk |

Either dual-boot Windows or run Windows in a VM.
As I've said for a LONG time. Windows is the better platform for eBooks. |

I consider myself to be fairly tech savvy, but ADE is a pain in the neck. When I find a public library book that is only available in epub, I use the Overdrive app on my iPad mini.
I ran into problems getting ADE installed and registered. No matter what I did, it said I was already using another device. I stopped trying to figure it out. Online directions sent me in circles. Using Calibre, I can borrow through Amazon, and read on whatever device I choose. |

With Windows, ADE 2.0.1 is trivial to install and very easy to get registered. The problem comes in trying to get ADE 2.0.1 to run under Wine (Linux). It can be done, but it's not easy (from what I've read).

As a test, I just installed ADE 2.0.1 on this computer. Went pretty flawlessly.
winetricks -q dotnet35sp1 winetricks -q windowscodecs winetricks -q corefonts wine ${INSTALL_FILE} The only additional step I required was installing the 32-bit version of nvidia's official driver. (I use nvidia graphics cards.) This is on wine 2.0.1,1 on FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE. It should work on any linux though. |

![]() I'm the same with Amazon at the moment. Getting books from them and loading them into calibre is simple. I thought doing the same with epubs would be to ![]() |
