Creating Freedom: Power, Control, and the Fight For Our Future by London-resident author Raoul Martinez (publisher website profile), an award-winning documentary filmmaker and artist, is his political philosophy treatise cum awareness activism manifesto focusing on the socioeconomic and cultural roots and ensuing development of certain things which are hot topics in current events, especially the dichotomy between so-called “freedom” in present society and actual liberty, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Canongate.
This is the book which accompanies the eponymous 2012 documentary which netted him a Best Documentary nom at the London Raindance Film Festival and won the Hollywood Artist Festival's Activist Spirit 2012 Award, and is being made free as part of a special publisher giveaway to help spread political awareness for the upcoming British elections. Currently free, probably just until the election is over @ Amazon UK, iTunes UK, Google Play, Kobo (available to UK only when I spot-checked assorted regional stores, YMMV) Unlikely to cross the pond, since some Random Penguin House imprint owns the North American rights, but outside of North America, there's a freebie bonus essay by the author: Empathy @ Amazon UK, iTunes UK, Google Play, Kobo (available to UK & also EU, Oceania, South America, Japan when I spot-checked assorted regional stores, YMMV) If you are interested, you can also listen to an exclusive interview with the author about this book @ Audible (probably available worldwide) Description In the run up to the June 8th General Election, Raoul Martinez and his publisher have decided to make the ebook of his book Creating Freedom free to readers in the UK so that the ideas and knowledge contained within it can be as widely disseminated as possible. We are far less free than we like to think. In Creating Freedom, Raoul Martinez exposes the mechanisms of control that pervade our lives and the myths on which they depend. Exploring the lottery of our birth, the coercive influence of concentrated wealth, and the consent-manufacturing realities of undemocratic power, he shows that our faith in free media, free markets, free elections and free will is dangerously misplaced. Written with empathy and imagination, this scholarly, fierce and profoundly hopeful manifesto makes a dazzling case for creating freedom on our own terms. |
