Why B&N Nook is failing.

I received an email from B&N for a coupon this is what it said:

Use code 17SPRING at checkout. May be redeemed only once in stores or online at BN.com. NOOK devices and NOOK Books excluded. Other exclusions apply.

If anyone who works at B&N is reading this then THAT is a worthless coupon, start giving out coupons for NOOK and I may start buying from B&N.

NOTE:
The nearness B&N B&M store to me is a 3 hour round trip, and I buy ebooks only these days.

So, if you don't use the coupon, then they won't get any money.
Smart man.

Now on email coupons, I get them all the time. If I need it great, if not oh well. What am I out 2 seconds of my time for reading it. So yes, it was useless to me but not to others.
So sorry but coupons are not why B&N is failing.
Besides coupons make very nice lures to get you to spend money with that company.
Edited to add: nearly all coupons in any form have some kind of restriction.

Yep, I have been getting these email coupons for years. I have never used one and never will....................as long as B&N excludes eBooks.

I really would like to see B&N get their act together on Nook. It seems like the biggest failing they have is lacking leadership.

While coupons would be nice and would certainly spur a few sales they aren't the reason Nook isn't doing well. B&N has occasionally sent out $5 credits to be used on ebooks (I've gotten two) and I doubt it's really done anything to help their overall business either.

I suspect one reason ebooks are excluded from coupon use is to avoid the issue of not being applicable to Big Five books. Most customers won't get that and will just be irritated, creating ill will - hardly the point of the coupon!

Nook is failing because of a looonnngggg series of bad choices made by their management that hurt their business and/or alienated consumers, Indie publishers, and corporate partners.
Some of those decisions seemed semi-reasonable at the time but most were questionable from the get-go and all have come back to haunt them.
It would take the better part of an hour to go year by year and list them all.

The thing is, from my outsider point of view, it does seem that that it wouldn't take much for Barnes and Noble to turn Nook around. Dedication and hiring better people to run it. Maybe look back to Nook's short golden age. I remember in the Nook ST/Nook ST with Glowlight phase they touted their use of ePub, expandable storage and their use of 'social DRM'.

Indeed, the way they switched DRM schemes without warning was one of of their biggest black eyes and is what pushed me to stop buying books from them.

They haven't switched DRM schemes? They still use Adobe Adept just like they have since they went straight ePub.

No, they haven't switched DRM since the initial switch in... 2015? But the way they handled the initial switch was pretty poor.

There was no switch in 2015. They've used Adobe Adept DRM since they started offering ePub's right after Nook launched.

The biggest failing with nook is not being able to download eBooks without a nook or nook for PC. That and the DRM is not compatible with most Readers using ADE. So unless you strip DRM, can download eBooks from B&N, and don't mind reading in of the apps, there's no reason to buy eBooks from B&N.

Sorry, but I had a Nook in 2015 and they did change the way they implemented DRM. Here are two articles about it, from March 2015:

Yes, they changed the method for the key, but they didn't change the DRM scheme which is what you'd said. It is still Adobe DRM just like it's always been and the DRM is still removed the same way.

Please don't miss my larger point via pedantry.

In the end, the way the change was handled stopped me from buying my books at B&N and moved me over to Amazon. And I wasn't the only one.
