Is it possible to have accounts in USA & Canada?
Just picked up a Kobo Aura One in Canada. Absolutely love the device. However, I subscribe to some of those ebook deal newsletters but one of them only shows books for USA which my account won't work with. When I add items to shopping cart they move to Canadian Prices (+$14!!).
Is there a way to get around this? |

Pick a mailing address, get a disposable gmail address, prepaid Visa from walmart, (haven't actually tested these on Kobo, I don't think, so no guarantees there.) Create a new user on your computer so you don't get browser cookies and ADE registration mixed up, and Apprentice ALF plugins, and you should be good to go. (Might need a USA vpn/proxy, but those are really common now.)
Considering the price difference caused simply by exchange rate though. I find it doubtful you'll save much money this way. But I've found it useful for content that is only licensed for sale in USA and not Canada. (Publishing is a funny business.) |

Can I switch accounts on my Kobo between my Canadian one and American on the fly?
I get the exchange rate but its the deals that I get through sites like Early Bird Books. $1.99US for a book or $14+ CDN for a book is nuts. Just found one this morning that is $2.99US and says its not available in Canada. |

Yes, by changing the country (& sometimes address) in your payment information you can "travel" anywhere. (I use a second account for traveling, just in case it were to ever become an issue)

If you want to change your location to a different country, you also need to delete any saved credit card first. While it may be easier and quicker to have multiple accounts registered in other countries, it also means that you'll need to side load all the books purchased on secondary accounts.
As to whether it's cheaper to buy content from a foreign country, it generally depends on whether it's sold by a different publisher and whether there are any sales going on with the publisher. I know I've seen books be free or 90% off the price at a foreign country, so it certainly can be worth gaming the system. I also advise using a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees, these fees can add several dollars to the cost of a purchase. |

You can travel to other countries just changing your account address, as others have said, but you can have a little trouble if you run into any problems and have to ask for a refund. I have experienced some problems to buy books when I had credit in my Kobo account and switched countries. So my advice would be to have two accounts, one for each country. You don't need different credit cards (though I recommend Paypal to avoid credit exchange taxes) or Adobe accounts, you can use the same Adobe ID for both accounts.
It's a bit inconvenience as you have to sideloaded the books from one of the accounts, if you like to take advantage of Kobo synchronizing your books. |
