Free (Kindle) Lonely Road Murder by John Russell Fearn [Vintage Crime Thriller]

Lonely Road Murder by the late British author John Russell Fearn (ISFDB, Wikipedia, SFE) is his vintage standalone crime thriller, this one starring a happy-go-lucky young woman who shockingly finds that her best friend and neighbour has been murdered and to put her mind at ease, begins to look into matters, as you do, whilst the bereaved widower, who seems to be a potential culprit, apparently succumbs to his guilty sorrow… …or did he? (cue ominous music ), free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press.

This was originally published in 1954 by Brown Watson using the pseudonym Elton Westward.

Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else worldwide that Amazon sells, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive or else program)

Description
Tragedy strikes…

Rosemary Lennox is a happy, bright young lady who’s lucky enough to have her close friends around her.

However, after a wonderful night out with her boyfriend, Rosemary comes home through a thick and terrifying fog to find her best friend and neighbour, Mary Francis murdered…

She begins having nightmares…

John Francis, Mary’s husband, is distraught over the loss of his beloved wife. Although their relationship could be tempestuous as times, they loved each other dearly and he becomes lost without her.

But he was the last to see her alive and admits that they had a row immediately prior to her death.

John seems close to breaking point and is soon found dead from apparent suicide by gas inhalation.

Was he hiding a guilty conscience?

The evidence doesn’t seem to add up.

In fact, the evidence seems to be pointing to a few people…

Rosemary must try not to lose her way as she sets about uncovering the culprit, but she’s determined to get justice for Mary…

Lonely Road Murder is an intriguing crime thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end.

Back when I first got married (to my first wife), we were driving to Arkansas to visit my parents. My parents came to my wedding, in Cincinnati, but this was the first time for her to visit Arkansas. They live up in the Ozark Mountains, where you pass through lonely hills on small highways that twist and turn arthritically into the night. There was no moon and the darkness was like a blanket laid across the land. The windows were up and the night was still and quiet. I casually remarked to my new wife that this would be a perfect place for a murder.

A few years later we both laughed at this, but she told me at the time that she wondered who she had married.

That was mean

Spoiler:

I'm somewhat leery about traveling on lonely stretches of road in rural areas. I have to do that whenever I visit the Carbon River entrance of Mt Rainier. There's one stretch of the road that passes by a couple of beat up mobile homes with junk trucks in the front yards. I get this creepy feeling that I'm in a scene from "Deliverance" and I just want to get the hell out of there.
