Water damage: fully functional, but battery really bad - replace?
TL;DR - Dropped in pool, cleaned and dried, battery lasts about 3 days while not used and in airplane mode.
Is the battery actually being drained by something busted on the logic board, or just the battery busted. So, I dropped my kindle in the pool on vacation, and pulled it out really fast. It crashed and restarted and crashed again , and eventually it stopped responding - classic water problems. I pull the front face of it off and let it sit in the sun for about 4 hours, so I'm convinced it was dry before I tried to plug it in again. Plugged it in and charged it up till it came on - and everything appeared to work. Unplugged it, and in a matter of hours the battery was fully drained, and was on a Battery Icon With Exclamation Point - not the normal "your battery is dead". I can not find any images of this online, so I have attached a recreation. When I got back home, I bought some distilled water and rubbing alcohol, and did some more work. I took it completely out of the frame and removed the battery, but did not separate the screen from the logic board, because I didn't have a small enough screw driver. I soaked it in distilled water for a bit, then rinsed it with distilled water, while brushing gently with a new toothbrush. Then I repeated the process with 91% rubbing alcohol. Then I blow dried it for a few minutes to evaporate the alcohol, and let dry again overnight. Everything put back together, and everything still works - Wifi, touchscreen, usb and all. But the battery is still draining super fast ( not as fast as when it first got wet ), and I don't know enough about water damage and shorted batteries to determine if I just need a new battery, or if something on the chips and logic boards are actually draining it. It isn't hot to the touch or anything. Any advice is appreciated. |

Did you cover it in Rice & leave it over night? My son put his cell phone in the laundry. Put it in a bowl of rice over night it lived another 2 years! Rice Draws out the moisture!

When the water dries it leaves contamination on the circuit board. You might to look at cleaning the insides, iirc alcohol does the job but google it first.

At this point, I am convinced that I have dried it and cleaned it as much as possible in the home. MY question is more for people to recommend whether they think only the battery is broken from being shorted out, or there is damage to the logic board that will never be fixed. What Kindle model are you writing about?
Does it work normally when it does have power? Such as when you leave it connected to a charger. If it does, use the dump messages command to dump the system messages and look for anything that might explain what is happening. You do that by enterying into the main page's search function: ;dm which will create 4 new documents (the logs) for you to look at. You can read them on the Kindle, but the lines are fairly long, so it is easier to read them on your PC where you have more screen. "Battery discharging fast" is all relative to what is going on inside. I.E: If the Kindle never reaches a suspend state ("goes to sleep") a fully charged battery only has about 3 to 4 hours of runtime. Perhaps I missed it, but I don't see where you ever posted **how long** it takes to go from full charge to the recharge screen after the cleaning. Last edited by knc1; 04-13-2017 at 09:35 PM. |

That battery is worn out.
Which is why charging raises the temperature rather than storing the energy. Luckly, the battery management chip is smart enough to keep it from bursting into flames. Buy new battery. Probably not associated with its bath. The batteries are normally sealed "gas tight" which also keeps out liquids. |

If it is not being charged at the time of those messages, it is most certainly bad.
I can only go by the things you post, I can not see over your shoulder or (like Amazon) channel into your mind. Nowhere do you mention what model Kindle you are writing about and your info block mentions a K3 and a PW3. So how was I suppose to know if the Kindle you are writing about is still in warranty? Did you see this line in your cut and paste? Code:

Keep in mind I'm not an expert, but here's my opinion. You may take it or leave - as you see fit:
There may be a possibility of that battery expanding due to having gotten wet. IF that happens, you're going to have a gooey electronic mess. It could even be a fire hazard. I think you should immediately remove that battery and search for a new one. |

I agree with Dr Drib.
The first logical thing to do after an electronic device gets wet is to remove the energy source immediately. An item that is plugged into an AC wall socket should be unplugged. A device that is running on batteries should have the batteries removed. However, with devices like Kindles it is not easy to remove the batteries. The fact that the Kindle kept rebooting immediately after its bath is not good. The faster you can disconnect a device from power, the better, but Amazon made it difficult with the Kindles. Lithium batteries are notoriously dangerous when they go bad, so like Dr Drib said, get that sucker out of the Kindle and dispose of it in a safe non-combustible manner. Will the Kindle be okay with a new battery? Who knows. The Kindle likely overheated and likely had multiple short circuits in the initial few minutes. I doubt it will ever be totally normal again, but it might be usable. |

I agree.
Peel off the bezel of your PW3, unscrew the Kindle's frame from the case back, turn over, unscrew the battery hold-down screws. The PW3 is an easy tear-down, use stiff pieces of plastic, such as a cut up credit card, to work under the bezel when pulling it off. That plus a tiny screw driver, and your all set. Note: Watch out for screws hidden under black tape, IIRC the PW3 has several of them. |

Thanks knc and everyone, I know I've gone back and edited my posts with everything people have asked for ( kindle type etc. ), so hopefully this thread remains useful for people searching in the future.
In the first post I mentioned I "took it completely out of the frame and removed the battery, but did not separate the screen from the logic board", So I have all the tools to pull the bezel off, just not the smaller screwdriver to get the screen seperated form the board. There was just 1 screw under the black tape on mine, but it took me WAY too long to realize why i couldn't pull it out. I was like "Are there clips I can't see, is it just in there really tight, whats going on. then I finally realized, oh, there's probably another screw. It was a good 4 minutes. Other than that post I linked from geekmaster ( I see knc1 was in there ), has anyone had any experience buying new aftermarket batteries? It doesn't look like amazon has official ones. I can see many on ebay in the proper form factor with official looking labels, but I've never bought a replacement battery for anything that wasn't from Best buy or Ebay.
