Odd problem with quotation marks
I've converted hundreds of books to Mobi and never run into this problem. I'm a basic user - I don't know much of anything about tweaking things and basically just run the program as it's set up. I converted a book from AZW to Mobi so I could email it to my Paperwhite. Using the "view" option in Calibre, the book looks fine on my computer, but when I email it to my Paperwhite or fire, there are weird boxes that appear around what would be conversations in the the story - like where there would normally be quotation marks (which do not appear in the view option on the PC). On the Paperwhite, they are little boxes with zeros and nines in them, on the Fire they just appear as empty rectangle boxes. On the PC, there is nothing there - no boxes, no quotation marks, just plain text.
Has anyone run into this problem before, and if so, is there a simple way to correct it? I'd greatly appreciate any help on this issue. Thanks in advance for taking the time! Kim |

This is a font encoding issue - your book contains glyphs that are not present in your selected font. You need to set the correct code page for your book; this would normally be Latin1. From memory, this is an option on the Mobi output options page.

I've just checked, and the setting is actually on the "Text" tab of the "Look and Feel" page of the conversion screen: the field called "Input character encoding". Set this to "Latin1" and your converted book should show the quotation marks properly.
