Fastest page turn with overdrive?

I've been reading a LOT of ebooks using Overdrive from my local library on my android tablet and phone, and my eye strain is telling me that I need to get an e-ink e-reader. Plus my birthday is coming up.

I appreciate the threads here and have spent a lot of time reading through them, but am not sure what I should be getting. I am located in the USA, so am limited in my options.

I really only check out e-books from my local libraries with Overdrive, so a tablet that would support me installing the Overdrive app would be great. (I think I've heard that some tablets support loading android apps?) I'd rather not have to hook up my computer to the e-reader every time I needed a book. I heard the new Kobo Aura One supported Overdrive, but it seems as though it is just Overdrive through the Kobo store, and it only supports a single library (I have two different e-libraries that I use) so I don't know how well that would work. I do also own a few ebooks through Amazon, but not many, and have loaded some things from Gutenburg as well, but Overdrive is my current major ebook provider.

The other major thing is that I am a fast reader, so I'd like to have something with quick page turns. I've tried some readers that had a noticeable wait time to load the next page, and don't want that.

Screen size- probably in the 7 to 8-ish inch range, I don't want the huge full sheet but I do want to be able to get a lot of words on the page at the same time.

Water resistance would be a nice feature as I do like to read in the bath occasionally, and would be taking the e-reader to Hawaii this fall. But it isn't a must-have as I can just be careful.

I'm not a huge fan of the Amazon infrastructure and system, so a Kindle wouldn't be my first choice, but there don't appear to be many options currently available in the US.

I'd appreciate any suggestions you have (and feel free to point me to other threads. I tried to find them in my searches but it is quite likely I missed something relevant). Thank you so much for your time!

You can use Overdrive on Kindles.
You can also order a Kobo.
You are not near as limited as most countries.
Actually, I think you can order pretty much any ereader you see here on Mobileread.
If you want waterproofing I recommend the Kobo H2O.
Hey @JSWolf, can she do overdrive on the H2O?

Not without connecting to a PC for transfer.

There are basically four options I can think of...

1) Buy a Kindle (6" screens are all they do). You can checkout through OD and once you select Kindle after checkout are taken to Amazon where you tell it to send the book to your Kindle. It can then be downloaded wirelessly.

2) Buy a Kobo (6, 6.8 and 7.8" screens). As you note the Aura One will do OD directly (more or less), but it sounds like you've researched that and it won't work for your use case (more than one library). Other Kobo's won't do OD wirelessly (unless you also have an Aura One), but will work with OD checkouts transferred by USB.

3) Buy a Nook (6" screen). Again books would have to be transferred via USB. If you were to go this route be sure to research ahead of time as I seem to recall a few hoops people were having to go through to get things working (may have been fixed by now).

4) Buy an Android based reader (most run a 4.x version of Android). I know Onyx has some in a variety of screen sizes. They can sometimes be found from third party sellers on Amazon or otherwise from shops like http://ereader-store.de in Germany (will ship to US). They will be a more expensive option than a store branded reader. Not all Android apps work well on eInk Android readers so research will need to be done as to if the OD app will run and if so how well it will run on a grayscale eInk device (most are kind of underpowered so the app may or may not run well).

Not you're completely perfect solution, but probably hits the most boxes of your wish list: get an Aura One, hook your most used library (assuming you use one more than the other) to the Aura for wifi loading and use Overdrive to sideload the books from the other library via USB. The Aura One gets you into the screen size range you want (which has pretty limited options). For the most part I find page turns to be nearly instantaneous so that shouldn't be a problem with any CURRENT e-ink devices but YMMV.

Thanks for your reply! I hadn't hear that I could run the Overdrive app on a Kindle e-ink reader. That's pretty nice. Last I'd heard that wasn't an option. There was a multi-step process involving another computer or internet browser to check out the book and send it to the Kindle, (and I could only do that if the book was available in Kindle format, and my libraries mostly has .epub only) and then I had to read it through a Kindle, and go back to the Amazon website to return the book. Has that changed on all Kindles or just some? I wasn't able to find information on this... the overdrive site only has information on the longer process.

Thanks for the detailed help. I think I'll have to be doing some research on those android readers and the Kobo readers as well. My main problem is going to be that I want to be able to have support for multiple file systems - Kindle's format and .epub . I've got that with my current 7" tablet, but don't have the e-ink screen, so my eyes are getting tired. The Kobo Aura One sounds pretty nice... I wish that there was someplace local that I could get my hands on one to see if it is really what I want or not.

Let me do a little more research.
Oh and have you found our Kindle and Kobo forums?

I have... but the accumulated posts over the time this forum has been in existence are rather daunting! I've been attempting to use search to find things but many search terms pull up too many (or not relevant) results.

With some of the other replies I've gotten, I think I'd like to learn more about the e-ink devices that run Android, but since this is a world-wide forum I'm not sure which e-ink devices (if any) are directly marketed in the US. (I'd rather not order something from overseas as support for issues might be difficult to obtain.) Maybe I need to ask that specific question in another thread. I haven't been able to find a thread that answers it, though I'm sure there OUGHT to be one!

I don't know of any US based sellers of eInk Android devices or any such devices marketed specifically to the US market. There may be an obscure reseller someone can point you to, but don't be surprised if any actual support involves shipping the device overseas.

So, in the US, basically if I want an e-ink device I have only three choices: Kindle, Nook, or Kobo? I was hoping there might be other options that I hadn't heard of. Oh well...

My suggestion is to get a screen larger than 6" and that leaves out Kindles. The Kobo Aura H2O (6.8" screen) will handle Overdrive eBooks, but you need to use your computer to transfer them. The Kobo Aura One (7.8" screen) will handle Overdrive eBooks and you can do so using the Reader or the computer.

You might be able to get other brand Readers via Amazon.

If you want to literally be able to walk into a store then you're basically looking at Kindle or Nook unless you're really lucky and have a local indie bookseller that actually stocks some Kobo's (none/pretty much none exist anymore). Kobo you'll likely be getting from Canada either directly from them or from Chapters Indigo.

Onyx is apparently available in two retail stores in New York (Brooklyn & Long Island) and will be available online from a US company soon (it looks like maybe the models have been renamed for the US market?)...

There used to be resellers in the US brands like PocketBook and Cybook/Bookeen, but AFAIK their all long long gone.
