Illumite reader

Anyone used or own one of these?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2224239864...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

It looks like it might be a cheap back-up for my Kobo Touch which is having snits over the SD card I'm having to use...

Can only find a couple of reviews on the German Amazon website, and it looks rubbish:

There's no mention of any real eBook formats. All you get is PDF for reading. I would stay away.

Being Android, I would assume it's just a matter of installing a suitable ebook reader, like FBReader (which I had on my Nexus). I did wonder about the battery life too - 1800 mAmp hrs, whatever that translates to.

Sigh. Really I want a replacement for my Hanlin. I find the Kobo unsatifactory in many respects, mostly because of the amount of side-loading I do.

I hope you find a good replacement! Sideloading is all I basically do. I have a newer Kobo but 99% of my books are all sideloaded- but I haven't used an SD card with it yet, just USB loading.

Is that because of the issue with the Touch, calibre and your Mac? Or something else? I have sideloaded around 3500 books onto my Glo HD with no issues.

Well, it hasn't helped.

- I left the Kobo on charge over the weekend; it was on 59% when we got back.
- A firmware update was applied too; the Kobo was still restarting when I went to bed. It has restarted now though - 7 hours later...

I have an ereader for when wi-fi connectivity is unavailable or dodgy as I don't have a smartphone (in fact my mobile phone spends 90% of it's time powered off). What irritates me about new ereaders is the assumption that you are always connected and the tendency to walled gardens and proprietary formats.

I know, the iPad, but it's primary usage is not as an ereader. My usage is games, web and email, calendar, then reading via the Kindle app, then miscellaneous apps like the shopping list. I've tried iBooks but it's a pain to sideload there, and I've tried other readers aiming for the experience I had with FBReader on the Nexus; Marvin is the best of those - but I've got out of the habit of linking to Dropbox.

The advantage of an eInk on Android device will be the ability to hold an off-line version of my LibraryThing catalogue via a 3rd party app. The official LT apps assume you're always connected and don't have the offline capability I need when browsing used book stores. Even in the UK network coverage is patchy in remoter areas.

In some ways, I would prefer not using Calibre to manage the side-loading process; I much prefer a drag-and-drop process in Finder like I did with my Hanlin or the Aluratek. The only reason I'm using Calibre for sideloading is for the Kepub conversion...

Because the e-bay seller is a moron.
If you go to the german Amazon page that is linked in the post above yours, you can see the picture of the box the reader comes in.

On the [back side of a] box they list pdf, epub, fb2, txt, html, rtf, pdb, lrc, mobi, djvu, chm, umd, doc formats.
They also list display as front-lit pearl e-ink.

The German reviewers complain that the browser and Internet is slow and that it has no play store. I do not understand from translate.google.com whether you can install *.apk files "out of box". He only complains that with missing play store you would have to side-load apps. If you can side-load your own apps, it might be a *very* interesting device for this price.

If that's an answer to my question, only the last part is actually relevant. And if that's the case, use calibre to convert the book to kepub and then sideload that. You will need to change the extension, but that is easy enough unless you are copying a lot of books at a time.

Now that would be a better way to do it! I'll have a go at that when I have a few hours spare (appointments and errands tomorrow, interview prep Wed, all-day assessment & interview Thu in Milton Keynes with an ungodly o'clock start, back to Milton Keynes Fri for a weekend do...

Is it possible to sideload onto the SD card directly via a standard card reader? Or does the SD card need to be mounted in the Kobo for the database to read the files correctly?

When you say change the extension, if calibre is converting to kepub, surely the extension is applied as part of the process? (If not, I've got a batch renamer.)

I have sideloaded apps in the past on the Nexus 7 - not sure I remember how to do it though! I'm pretty sure the app I want is available on github.

The other thing I spotted was an Onyx Boox C67(?) for about £100 with free delivery...

No need for the SD card to be in the Kobo when you add books to it; the device will scan the card when it's inserted and add the content to it's database.

Yes. The device looks for new books whenever the SD card is inserted.

To sideload kepubs you need the double extension of ".kepub.epub". But, that doesn't work elsewhere, so calibre uses "kepub". The driver fixes handles the renaming when you send the book to the device.

You might also take a look at the Icarus Illumina, the Inkbook Prime, or the Energy Sistem Pro HD. All android based and available in UK for around the £100 mark.

The Illumite reader seems badly designed. Placing the home and light(?) buttons below the page turn buttons seems like it would make it awkward to hold.
