KA1 Frozen @ restart after upgrade

Hi all, I'm really hoping to get a solution to this here, rather than initiating a warranty claim - the device is only 2 months old.

I normally turn off sync & wifi, and have not updated in a while. Yesterday I had been buying a couple of books, and then I pressed sync. The device started downloading the books, sync was running and then suddenly the device restarted to this screen:

The red light is permanently on. When I try the manual reset method, it will turn blue briefly, then then the orange light comes. If I press for 30 seconds, the orange light flickers, turns bright red for a second, then back to orange.

The screen doesn't change at all. Device is intact, no scratches or display errors. Does not connect to computer at all, whenever I connect there's a USB device failure.

Anyone encountered this before? Many thanks in advance. Don't care about the device memory getting wiped or whatever, I have backups of everything. I just can't get it to react at all.

Not quite sure what you mean by the manual reset. Did you mean the multi-step factory reset?
  1. Connect your eReader to power by plugging the USB cable into your computer or a charger.
  2. Press and hold the power button until the power light turns off
  3. Release the power button.
  4. Press and hold the power button for around 30 seconds -- be patient
  5. Wait for the Restore screen to appear and then release the power button
  6. At this point, your ereader screen should turn black with white text in the lower left area.
  7. Be patient and your Kobo should be back in operation when the process is done.

My apologies if this is the procedure you followed.

@David, Yes, I followed those steps multiple times. I have also left the device to charge overnight just in case. When I do this, the pc attempts to connect to it, but does not recognize it.

The screen is already black with white text as per screenshot, and doesn't change at all. It's completely frozen.

Stormdog,

I can understand your pain, I updated both my glo's which just have the vanilla firmware/software on them and all books synced using wireless this week and had to do a factory reset and reinstall all my books on both devices. I am now wary of updating my aura's in case the same thing happens.

My Glo HD updated successfully, but I see a new firmware is already out that supercedes the one I have updated to.

Best of luck with your device.

Unfortunately that really does sound like a warranty level lockup.

At this point, it does sound like an issue that is going to require a warranty exchange.

Not being recognized by the computer is pretty much expected in this case. Until the OS is running on the Kobo to allow the connect and than expose the FAT32 partition, it will not be recognized by the computer.

Did you get your KA1 working? I've had this exact issue with my Glo HD more than once, when upgrading. So frustrating. I've come close to pitching it. Only thing that worked for me was plugging into a wall outlet for 1/2 hour or so. That usually got it going. Plugging it into my laptop did nothing in this state. Sometimes I had to power it off and on while keeping it plugged in (sometimes more than once) That has always kicked it into gear when all else failed. Needless too say I'm very reluctant to upgrade it ever again.
