Pixel Qi vs E- ink ? (Monitor)
I'm in need of an E-paper Monitor for my laptop/computer and I'm trying to decide between two technologies.
The Pixel Qi Monitor costs around 600 dollars and the E-Ink Monitor (Dasung Paperlike) 1000 bucks which is a lot. The Pixel Qi screen is 10 inches big so it's fairly small but the good thing about it is that you don't have to worry about lag or speed unlike with E-ink. You can do everything, watch videos etc. The E-paper tech here revolves around a grey 'no backlight mode' which is said to be not as good as E-ink as far as readability. I'm not sure if the screen is glare-free, if anybody knows, feel free to clear that up The paperlike screen is 13.3 inches big so that's a plus. Readability is great due to E-ink and I could easily use it druing the day and in the evening with ambient light. Could be potentially laggy but most importantly there's the goddamn price. What do you guys think ? Has anybody worked with Pixel Qi and can say something about it ? Edit : I could go for the Kindle DX (9.7 inches) and use it as a monitor which would save me a lot of money but I'm in doubt about its usefulness There are also Pixel Qi Display panels for 100 bucks, this is just a thought : Is there a possiblity to turn it into an external monitor somehow ? I have played around with the DX as a Windows monitor and was not satisfied at all. I followed the directions of how-to posts on jailbreaking the Kindle, installing software on it & and on Windows. When I finally figured out all the elements of what to do, the lackluster result was immediately apparent:
1) I could not get the Windows-mouse to be visible on the Kindle. I could see the Windows desktop/programs OK, but without seeing the mouse, I could not utilize Windows w/o looking at my main LCD monitor. 2) 9.7" is too small ... and I got more eye strain from squinting at the Kindle to figure out what the teeny text says. DX has a 1200x800 resolution and the "use a DX as a monitor" instructions maps pixels of the Windows desktop 1-to-1 on the Kindle, such that you can't zoom out a 1024x768 Windows resolution to fit the 1200x800 kindle. What happens is that you get a black area for the the (1200-1024)x(800-768) area of the DX. Widows programs with smaller text is very hard to read on the Kindle 3) The greyscale of the DX makes it even harder to read/identify things. On a LCD, green text on a red background is easy to identify, but on greyscale, it can be very difficult to read, especially on 9,7" screen with very small pixels. |

The info I saw from Booxstore: boox max 13' new version in june will have hdmi in ! But the current version have no light and i assume it's the old tech (ePearl ?).
Be aware as a newbie in ereading I was disappointed with the background darkness on my i86. Hopefully, there is in build light. But when i see now the new eink (carta ?) tech on small 6', I would give a try even if 8' is better for pdf. For bigger also. |

Actually I'd prefer no backlight at all because it'd be much easier on the eyes. Either that or they give you the option to turn off the backlight completely - and I mean completely because for whatever reason you can't turn it off completely on the kindle paperwhite for example ( so I've heard). |

So you know how greyish is the background on Pearl Eink (On day light it' is already very dark then at night a strong light is needed). There is no light on big Eink screen I read. So it will have to be an external.
My advice was to wait for E Carta bigger screen cause it is easier to read on low light (and will keep his value longer). It'is coming: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=275632 No idea how Pixel Qi display work. If it support mouse pointer, connect to windows and you can have it for 100 it's good beside the low resolution and 16/9 ratio. Last edited by Xavié; 03-03-2017 at 08:34 AM. |
