Seriously are they doing post-processing and colirizing their screenshots or something? Or does the system itself actually show images/covers etc in color before rendering it on the screen? I would've imagined they'd convert them to grayscale to save memory/time since it's going to be grayscale anyway once it's rendered.

If the image on the device is in colour then it is probably faster just to display it as a colour image than it is to convert it to greyscale first. It used to be that covers downloaded to e-ink devices from the Kobo server were all in greyscale anyway, and that made sense since it reduced download time and storage requirements. But it seems that some covers are now coming through in colour, I can't understand why they would do that on purpose, maybe it is just a mistake. If sideloading from Calibre there is an option to send greyscale cover images. |

Well that makes sense then, but the kobo images folder are all black and white.

There are a lot of people who read epubs in tablets or smartphones. The ebooks shops are thinking of them too.

The images inside the books are not changed, they have always been in colour. The greyscale covers that are downloaded from the server are used outside the book, e.g. on the sleep screen or as thumbnails in the library view. They are downloaded specially for each device so there is no need for them to be in colour if the device downloading them doesn't have a colour screen. |
