I have been encountering history and science books for the general reader that Amazon describes as etextbooks. Is this a format? Does it effect how the book is rendered on a kindle? I am considering these as gifts for people who just want to download and read.

See here. It's basically a wrapper around a PDF. It's supported on tablets and PC/Mac apps, but not on eInk Kindles.

I just stumbled into this - sorry to necropost.

Amazon eTextbooks are not always pdfs. I bought this book about a month ago, when the price dropped: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B014EOUMZA
For a PW2, it downloads as an azw3.

'eTextbook' is a marketing term, not a format. It may be in any format. In this case 'The Big Picture' does not use the fixed-layout 'print replica' format.
