Aura H2O actual firmware...

hello there

i kinda lost overview and am not really able to follow it anymore. i used
search here and saw a lot of threads, but it became confusing, because of the different states for all the different kobo's...

please someone enlighten me what the current firmware-state for aura
h2o's is

im using 3.19.5761 currently and see a lot of 4.xxx.xxx's firmware
everywhere, but not for h2o's... am i overlooking something?

are h2o's considered grandpa's these days since the one is out?

whats happening?

You can relax! You already have the latest firmware for the H2O. Those 'in the know' are confident that there will eventually be updates for the older models. The current 4.x firmwares are not targeted at the H2O.

H20 should get Overdrive public library book checkout when updated firmware is targeted for H20. Hopefully before A1 owners quite whining. Squeaky wheel gets all the attention with no apparent end in sight.

From what I've heard, don't expect OverDrive on older devices.

I'm still hoping that there is a "yet" attached to that statement. I can understand them not putting OD on discontinued devices, especially the Touch, Glo, Mini and Aura. But the Aura H2O and Aura Edition 2 should get it. And I'd like to think the Glo HD would get it as well. We'll have to wait and see.

Kobo's parent corporation now owns Overdrive and earns a little $$ for each book loaded to ereader with overdrive. They earn more from each book sale but music copyright owners earn lots of money from music performed or played in bars, clubs, radio, TV, and over internet. This can result in more profit than only selling books or records much like selling fewer expensive hard cover books and more cheaper paper back books. This is more profitable then us reading free public domain books.

Someone did post that the latest firmware for the A1/AE2 works on the Glo HD. They are all mark 6 hardware. You can put that in the Wiki if you want. The Touch 2.0 is also mark 6, but I've not read of anyone trying the new firmware with one.

No. The notes should show what devices it was officially released for. The discussion thread should include whether it is safe for other devices.

That's a valid request. At the moment the table just lists the official devices that a release is for, but obviously some firmware also unofficially works on other devices with the same hardware version. What's a good way of describing this without making the table even more complicated and dense?

Perhaps the Notes column could say something like:

Officially supported: (whatever)
Unofficially works: (whatever)
(remaining text with Discussion thread, Change log, instructions links)

EDIT: making people discover the unofficial list in the linked discussion thread is another option too.

It should also be mentioned if it's the entire firmware or just KoboRoot.tgz and from which firmware file to use.

Really people do that? Ye gods.

Trying to include that would be way too detailed. Pointing people at the discussion threads is the only sensible way to help people hell-bent on creating a custom "cut and shut" job.

A good example is firmware 4.2.8110. I'm running 4.2.8110 on my H2O. But it's a firmware for the KA1/AE2. The OS that's part of the firmware update is not compatible with non-mark 6 devices. But I can install the rest of it using just KoboRoot.tgz.

That is important to know. Installing the OS could cause a brick or the need to factory reset. So I do think that just pointing people to the relevant thread only isn't a good idea. I think it is a good idea to ALSO point them to the relevant thread.
