Error converting epub to kepub

Hello everyone,

I use Calibre 2.76 with Windows 10 and I had no problems converting from epub to kepub with the KePub Output plugin until last month.
Since then I have the problem that an error occurs when I try to convert an epub file into kepub - not with every file but with most of them. The same happens with epub files I have already converted before!

I did not change anything in Calibre for a long time, except updating the software and its plugins from time to time.

I have tried to solve the problem by my own with the help of the information of different threads but I failed. I deleted for example the folder "calibre" in the folder "Appdata/Roaming" and installed only the KePub Output plugin but it didn't help.

If I try the same on a different computer everything works fine. If I try it on my computer with a different user the same problem occurs, even with an administrator account.

I would be happy if anyone could help me to get rid off the problem.
Anyhow, I wish everyone of you a happy new year and all the best to you!

Best regards
Lemmi

@Lemmi - can you open the epub in the Book Editor?

Also try giving calibre its very own private 'Temp' directory. I suggest you create a directory at the root of your system drive named 'CalibreData', and within it a subdirectory named 'Temporary' (those are names are suggestions, adjust to suit your locale and file system naming practices)

And then set the CALIBRE_TEMP_DIR environment variable to "%systemdrive%\CalibreData\Temporary". See ==>> Environment variables

Hello theducks, hello BetterRed,

thank you very much for your extremely quick answers! I didn't expect that at Silvester.
Although BRs hint regarding the environment variable didn't help to solve the problem, your answers lead me to think only about the permission aspect.

Then I remembered that I have installed a program called "ransomfree" that monitors file changes in the background. I had the idea that this program might check / lock a file when Calibre wants to delete it. After I had deinstalled that program the converting worked again. So thanks to your hints I could get rid off the problem!

But: I still think that the problem also had to do with the KePub Output plugin because I had absolutely no problem when I converted from epub to azw, mobi, docx,...

Thanks again and a happy new year!

@Lemmi - thanks for getting back to us.

That the problem ONLY occurs when the KePub Metadata Writer plugin - which is the only Optional PI of that type - is used could mean that a common change has been made to the built-in Metadata Writer PI's that needs to be reflected in the KePub metadata writer PI. I'll ask someone who may know to take a look at it.

For now I'll leave this thread here.

@Lemmi: Looking at the log file, the error is in code to do a dump a copy of the output into another directory for debug purposes. I assume the permissions of the destination directory are the problem. This looks like "E:\Download\temp". This is set in the "Debug" settings at the bottom of the conversion dialog.

As to why it is only happening with conversion to kepubs, is it only one book? The conversion settings are stored with each book when you do a conversion. They are reused if you do another conversion. If you have this error, and try the conversion again before fixing problem, it will happen again. Clearing the debug option should solve this, or fix whatever the permissions problem is.

@davidfor:
Sorry for my late answer, but I was some days off.
You are right, I activated the debug option and the log was written into E:\Download\temp. But the problem still occured (with a different folder) when I deactivated this option.
The problem didn't only occur with one book but with several, even with ones that have already been converted before. As I have had no problems before I've installed the program I mentioned in my last posting and after I have deinstalled it I am pretty sure that it caused the problem. Probably you'll get the same effect if you install the program on your computer.

Best regards
