Calibre Animates Opening the Library...
For some reason, when I start Calibre in os x, it now animates opening the library. It starts with a small rectangle which gradually expands to fill almost the whole screen.
I use "Disable Animations" because of my sensory processing issues, but it doesn't block this animation or the flashing cursor. |

@MarjaE - would this help - auto start minimized... | Official Apple Support Communities
I have a similar issue with an image manager in Windows. Its startup is slow and it paints its main windows in series of jerky steps; so I start it minimised, the taskbar (dock) lights up when its 'ready'. BR |

![]() In Windows with or without the splash screen. calibre opens up somewhat jerkily, exacerbated if you have column colouring and/or column icons. And something strange happens if I start it minimised. What does Disable animation actually do. It doesn't disable the Jobs spinning wheel, or the progress bars, or the spinners in the editor. Or alter the book browser behaviour. IMO they're the things that 'animate'. I'll run with it checked and see what difference it makes. BR |

Nothing in the calibre stratup is animated. And the option to disable animation disables *optional* animations not animations that are critical to their function such as progress bars and spinners.

I try to look away for a few minutes when opening Calibre, because zooming and expanding animations are one of my migraine triggers. In Firefox, by contrast, the library opens with a full-sized window. Last edited by MarjaE; 12-08-2016 at 01:08 AM. |

The Library DOES start small, then expand to final size.
I can't tell you how many steps or if it just goes from 'start size' to 'last used size' in 1 step or many. Not all of us have the hottest performing hardware, so we get to see these kinds of things. W10 on a core Duo (my Gefocce 210 vid is 1 level above onboard as proprietary form factor PSU won't handle power needs of better performance) |

I've been running with Disable Animations checked for 2 months (I'd forgotten I changed it) and I've not noticed any changes. But there's a swag of functions I don't use, such as the cover grid and carousel, single MDE dialogues, and the device related functions, so maybe there's optional animation in some of them.
When I switch libraries and my data drive has fallen asleep I get a momentary glimpse of the corner of the cover carousel in the top right corner of the book list, even though I never use it. My gut feeling is that this is fairly recent (i.e. within the last year). @MarjaE - are you able to take a video of what it is that your seeing that is causing you problems. That would give you something specific to refer to, and us something to see. I did notice the new splash screen writes several messages on one of the book spines as it starts, something like 'Initialising...', 'Loading fonts...' etc, I normally run with the splash screen off. Sometimes Calibre opens at full size, shrinks to a smaller size, and expands again to full size. I encounter the same issue on the laptop monitor and on the external monitor, but it only grows sideways on the laptop monitor, instead of in all directions on the external monitor. |

@MarjaE - I was thinking of a smartphone camera video rather than screen capture video.
I occasionally get to see calibre running on OSX but I've not noticed anything like what you've just described, I'm pretty sure I would have, had it been there. From your description it does sound like an operating system behaviour, its not the sort of thing one could write into a program inadvertently - but if its only happening when you start calibre... I can only imagine that there's an obscure setting somewhere in OSX that the calibre start-up code triggers for some equally obscure reason. Maybe its a Qt thing. Do you use Sigil? It's another x-platform program that uses Qt for user interaction functionality, you could try installing it to see if exhibits the same behaviour on start up. BR |

I don't think I can do that either. I don't use Sigil so I can't test with it.
I think Calibre might be switching to a default window size and then back to the last-used window size. But the default is small, and I have to use Calibre in a larger size, on the bigger screen, to work with tags, to see formats, etc., and extra columns to see the tags at a glance. |
