Calibre does not recognise connected iPad Mini

Hi All

Discovered the excellent Calibre this weekend after a friend recommended it to me. Super stuff.

However, I can't seem to get Calibre to recognise my iPad Mini when it is connected to my MacBookPro.

I have managed to get some eBooks loaded on the Mac, converted to ePUB format, then save that file to disk and drag to iTunes which then syncs the Books app on my iPad to the Mac and I am able to read the book, however... what i want to do is to be able to read the books using the Kindle app on my iPad.

The manual suggests that Calibre should automatically detect when my iPad is connected to my Mac, but alas it doesn't in my case.

How do I go about resolving this please? Any advice?

Kindles and Kindle apps do not read ePub versions of ebooks. You will need the Kindle versions. You can convert unlocked ePubs to the Kindle format.

I haven't used calibre in years, so I'll let others explain how to use it and which formats will work best for your case.

OK, I hear ya jack thanks. But I can easily create a Kindle format version of an eBook doc, the issue I have is that within Calibre I don't see any connected devices, when the manual says that Calibre should automatically detect my iPad when connected.

If I launch iTunes, it sees my iPad immediately.

Several years ago, Calibre detected when an iPad was connected, but that functionality was broken several years ago.

You can now transfer to your iPad a number of ways depending on what reading app you use. If you want to read on the Kindle app, and you buy via amazon, then you can simply download inside the Kindle app. If you are trying to read mobi ebooks, then you can sideload by going to iTunes, select the kindle app and drag any mobi ebooks you want there.

What I want to do is to be able to read ePub iBooks that are currently located on my MacBookPro (within Calibre, and perfectly readable), using the Kindle app on my iPad.

When you say 'side load'... I am unsure what that is or means, and then when you say 'in iTunes select the Kindle app' - how do I do that within iTunes? And do you mean on the Mac or iPad?

Hi,
I am using a windows based m/c. I connect my ipad to that. All I do then is open ITunes and look for my device on that. Once that is open I then drag books from my files straight across to iTunes and it is done. Hope this works for you on your Apple based equipment but I don't see why not.
