Switching to Kindle.. I have some questions
Hey everyone. I've owned kobos since 2010. Recently they frustrated me enough to switch and I ordered a Paperwhite.
I've tried to look up comparisons. I've had most recently the Kobo one and the h2o. If I go to the Paperwhite, as it is much cheaper, am I going to see a huge dip in quality? I'm not okay giving Kobo $280 again after taxes after what they did. Im willing to suck it up and transfer $600 worth of Kobo purchases on Kindle. Thanks for helping, this feels like a big move to me. I will miss the waterproofing though. |

You cant transfer your epub to PW.... No Amazon reader can read epubs.
BTW What did Kobo do? Last edited by Barbara1955; 11-20-2016 at 05:51 PM. |

I have Kindles and Kobos and Nooks and I think the quality of all of them is similar. If anything the Kindles are just a little nicer although I'm sure a lot of Kobo and Nook owners will disagree.

Basically I sold my h2o which I loved to get the aura one. Both aura ones had problems. Kobo Customer service is terrible. Sent me a replacement but the wrong unit.. the return envelope was also sent sealed.. lol.. so I returned the one to the store while I could because of the poor experience. Now I don't have an e-reader and feel frustrated.
I don't feel okay giving Kobo more of my money, $280 after tax is alot. Paperwhite is $120 right now. I'm also stuck with a $60 Kobo case due to this whole thing. They were only quick responding when it was regarding getting their wrong unit back.... I know the interface is so different and I am used to and enjoyed Kobo. Am new to kindle, never had one. And I'm familiar with calibre so it's no problem. My problem is losing all the cloud functionality on my Kobo purchases Last edited by challe232; 11-20-2016 at 08:29 PM. |

They have a black friday sale on kindles right now, in the US at least. Paperwhite is $20 off.
![]() I only ever had kindles as far as e-readers go so I would have a hard time comparing them. I can tell you though that their customer service is great when one does have issues with the device. At least my contacts with them have been pretty good. |

The kobo's 'fon't genius' ability to adjust font weight and fine tune the font size is unmatched in Kindle. That being said, while display options on the Kindle are more limited, the screen quality is the same. The Kindle is *much* more responsive to touch controls, and is incredibly better at handling large images, if you run across books with nice artwork or maps and what not.

What "cloud functionality" are you referring to?

Just the sync functionality vs side loaded. Like whenever I got a new Kobo or had to read on my phone, it knew where I left off.

I am in Canada, and I too, no longer use Kobo.
Kobo uses epubs and is compatible with the overdrive lending libraries in Canada, too. A person cannot just transfer their bought books from Kobo to Kindle. You would have to download your epub files to your PC, and unlock the DRM via calibre and then convert them to .mobi (or azw, or whatever file format it takes). Unlocking the DRM is the only way to be able to move your books from one store's devices to another. (It's against the rules to discuss specifically how to do it, but we are allowed to point to "apprentice alf" so you can educate yourself about the tools and how they work for your computer) Books bought from Kobo are intentionally designed to work on Kobo devices (unless you intervene), and same with Kindle. I buy most of my books from amazon.ca now and the few I've bought from kobo when I owned it are in my calibre. I can now read them whenever I want on whatever platform I choose. Kobo has two choices for screen sizes larger than 6". The H20 at 6.8" and the Aura One at 7.9". Last edited by JSWolf; 11-21-2016 at 08:20 AM. |

The OP talks about loving their H2O. Only had trouble with the rev 1 Aura Ones. The way I read it, they only want to move to Kindle because they're annoyed at Kobo as a company, not because there was any issue with the H2O.
