Calibre on iPad?

Long time Android user and I've had Calibre Companion for years. Recently got an ipad and I see CC is not available in Apple's walled garden. Is there a way to easily sync my ipad with the Calibre library on my desktop?

And is there a way to do this without installing iTunes? As a PC user, I have grown to detest iTunes the couple of times I've installed it to use iPods. I really, really don't want iTunes (which I'm sure works great on Macs) on my PC.

So am I stuck with using Dropbox to make the transfer?

You can also use OPDS compatible ereaders such as Marvin and MegaReader (plus quite a few others) to interface to the Calibre server.

I personally use Marvin interfacing to a Calibre2opds generated catalog hosted on a Raspberry Pi on my home network. This avoids me needing to leave Calibre running all the time.
