Buying a new e-reader

Hey everyone. Im looking to buy my first e-reader. I like the price of the Kindle Paperwhite at Amazon right now, but I have a few questions. Will I be able to install Cool Reader 3 on the Kindle or I will have to jailbreak it first. And if I do have to jailbreak it is it still possible to do that on the latest firmware version?
If that is not possible can you point me to another model, not much more expensive than the Kindle, on which i can install Cool Reader 3. Thanks.

i was adament i would never go to an ereader but so much freedom with an ereader, i basically carry all my shelves with me and no end of choice of what to read sometimes more time deciding what to read than actually reading

What is it about Cool Reader that makes it make-it-or-break-it? Any specific feature? I ask because it may be that the stock software on a Kindle or Kobo or whatever might work just fine for you.

Also, you didn't list your location. In Europe there are several e-ink devices that run Android with access to the Play Store. You could install the Android Cool Reader app and use that.

You would definitely have to jailbreak it. AFAIK that's possible with the latest firmware, but I haven't kept up to speed on it so I'd check the Kindle Developers forum here on MR.

Looks like there is a version for Kobo (no jailbreaking needed)...

An alternative to Cool Reader you may want to also look at is KoReader which I know is popular with a lot of folks...

With Cool Reader i can read books in fb2 format which saves a lot of space on the device compared to mobi format. Plus a lot of the books in my country (Bulgaria, East Europe) are in this format so i wont have to convert them with calibre. Cool Reader has a lot more customization compared to the stock software so i can tune it the way i want.

Any specific Kobo model that rivals the Paperwhite with relatively the same price?

The Glo HD was just discontinued, but it would be the closest to the PW. It was replaced with the Aura Edition 2 (which is on sale right now) which doesn't have as high of a resolution.

You can install CoolReader on all PocketBook models. Have a look at the PocketBook forum here on MobileRead. You'll see that there is a very good version of CR for PB by brucelee.

I would also recommend a Pocketbook. I use Coolreader with mine and Installation is really easy.

Inkbook Obsidian made by ArtaTech. It's a good ereader, Android based so you can install apps. If you have used an Android phone it's very similar.

It comes with FBReader which I believe reads fb2 files already so you may not need CoolReader. It has expandable storage so you can have really a lot of books on it. Like all ereaders navigating is slow, but reading a book works well. I really like how the screen is flush with the bezels so it's easier to keep clean than other ereaders.

Inkbook Obsidian really looks like a good ereader. The only downside seems to be the lesser pixel density (212ppi). Now I really can't decide if 300ppi displays make a big difference in reading. What do you guys think, because if the difference is barely noticeable I will go with the inkBook.

I have a number of 300ppi ereaders and some 212ppi readers and I use both all the time. I can't tell the difference.

Other people say they can and I don't doubt them but to me they're the same.
