View Korean On The Kobo Touch

After a while of messing with my kobo, I realized I couldn't see Korean anywhere on the system(Unless you're looking at a book and it is a PDF). If you would like to know how to view Korean, then follow these steps
  • Plug in your Kobo
  • Open the Kobo's folder on your computer
  • Open the "fonts" folder in the Kobo folder(If non-existent, create a folder named exactly, even case, "fonts")
  • Go to https://github.com/adobe-fonts/sourc...ses/tag/1.001R and click "Source code (zip)" in the downloads section
  • Wait for it to download and unzip the folder
  • Open the folder you just unzipped then go to "SubsetOTF" then "KR"
  • Copy the font "SourceHanSansKR-Regular.otf" to the fonts folder in your Kobo folder
  • Eject the Kobo and open an ePub book
  • Tap on the centre of the screen, and then tap the button that looks like two "A"s
  • Tap the "Font Face" dropdown, then go down to the bottom and select the "Source Hans Sans KR Regular" font
  • Wait for the font to load itself
  • Enjoy reading Korean!
Sorry for the super detailed post but I didn't want people getting lost easily

Cheers!

Great!

DrabWeb,

I appreciate the effort you put into your post - your instructions are very clear and helpful, and it helps resolve one of the weaknesses of my kobo device (korean language support and no landscape mode for non-pdf files)

Have a wonderful day

Dunno about Korean, but for Japanese you must use KEPUB format instead of EPUB. The EPUB side of things does not seem to have any CJK support, even if you could make it display the characters it would mess up counting words/pages/...

It works OK with Chinese as long as I put the JingHei fonts in the font folder. Some suggested Koreader, but I have yet to explore.

Okay, thanks for the tutorial on how to install Korean fonts on Kobo...

... but how do you read ebooks that contain Korean characters and are written in English or other Western language? e.g. language learning manuals? Are the English characters displayed properly?

Not sure about Korean but Hebrew and Japanese text both display English characters -- the glyphs for those languages do not overlap with the glyphs used for the Latin character set. The only caveat is that the font file needs to contain the Latin glyphs. Admittedly the direction of the text can be a bit unusual though that depends on the creator of the ebook.

I'd suggest modifying the Eject the Kobo and open an ePub book line into two lines
  • Eject the Kobo and power cycle it
  • Open an ePub book

Without the power cycle, font selection/use can get a bit interesting.
