[iOS] CC v1.0.4

Hi everyone, thanks for your patience regarding the bug with the content server, where newer downloads would replace older ones. I think I've finally resolved it without unwanted side-effects.

After downloading the new version, you'll have the bug one more time, where a new download from the content server will overwrite your previous download. But in doing so, the new download will fix the error in the database and ensure that the correct information is saved. Future downloads will then be correctly distinguished from each other. (The root cause was that the app wasn't storing one of Calibre's identifiers for the book. Thus, when downloading a new book, it couldn't tell the two books apart since they both were missing the identifier. This new update has no way of knowing what the identifier should have been, but all new downloads will store it correctly now.)

I've just submitted this update to Apple, and as before, it should go live within a few days.

That's next on my CC list. I had to focus first on errors that were affecting everyone. I'm going to try to get to this tomorrow. However, if I can't solve it, I don't mind just refunding your order.

That's very kind of you Steve but tbh I'd rather have a working iOS CC app. As I said on my other thread (which no ones posted on) I have two problems, this error with my iPad and my iPhone app won't stay connected, which is baffling, and it's on MAC and Windows 10.

The only things those two laptops have in common is Norton Internet Security and they both link to the same Calibre database (it's held in Dropbox), but the android app has the same things and that works perfectly.

I used to do user testing (leaving work tomorrow) so I'm happy to help test any ideas you have. It might be best to email or pm me if you do want me to do anything.

I find it hard to believe that I am the only one with issues. Right now the app has been removed from both devices and i'll wait to hear from you.

Steve I saw this on another thread

Quote:
If the files are definitely in Dropbox, then the next thing to check is whether you've accidentally somehow denied CC access to your Dropbox. (I think the error message would be different in this case, but it's worth checking anyway.) To check, log in to the Dropbox website, go to your account settings via the menu at the top right, then click on the Security tab. Towards the end of that page should be a section called "Apps Linked". CC iOS should appear in that list with permission type "Full Dropbox". If that's not there, I'm not entirely sure how to restore it. I think the easiest would be to go back to CC's settings menu, open the "Cloud Connection" section and then tap on "Reset cloud connection". When you try to connect again, it should go through the process again of asking you to give Dropbox permission to share your files with the app.
I only send txt files, and they are on my Mac/laptop but the folder is within the Dropbox folder. At no time have I ever been asked to authorise Dropbox access on the iOS CC. And it's not showing in my Dropbox settings. Not sure if this helps.

FWIW: four years with the Android app have shown me that it is not rare that only a handful of people have a particular problem, sometimes only one person. It has happened more than once. The usual reason is that there is something unusual about the cross-product of network setup, desktop OS version, calibre version, and (in the Android case) Android version and device manufacturer.

A good example is a problem reported a few days ago, where a user had difficulties connecting to Dropbox on one of four devices (3 Android, 1 iOS). It was an Amazon device that failed. It turns out that the problem was caused by some low-level incompatibility between Amazon's version of Android, the model of Kindle Fire, and the SD card. The identical problem cropped up once 6 months earlier with a device running a version of CM Android.

I am not arguing that your problem isn't real. If you see it then it is real, end of discussion. I am only saying that the problem might be very rare, and for that reason very difficult to solve.

Hi Steve,
I've been waiting anxiously for this update, after installing and briefly testing it with the original Marvin and Marvin 3.0.9 everything seems to be working the way it should, although M3 required a restart before it would open the copied over book. Very well done, as soon as I explore it a little more thoroughly I will definitely be leaving a very positive review.
Thank you again for your efforts and quick response.
Doug

I know, most people are more frustrated about putting the time into figuring out why something isn't working than they are about the money itself. Unfortunately I can't guarantee to fix every issue.

Now as it happens, I haven't yet spent a serious amount of time looking into this; my job got in the way yesterday and ate up the hour or two I was going to spend. My next chance is on Saturday.

We're mixing up two connection types. There's "Wireless Device" where CC interacts in real-time with Calibre; phone and Mac/PC need to be on the same WiFi network at the same time. No authorisation is needed here, even if your files are actually stored in your Dropbox folder on your Mac. This is because CC is getting the files from Calibre, and Calibre already has access to files on your Mac.

One of the other types is "Cloud" where CC connects to Dropbox and downloads files from Dropbox's servers. This lets you get your books whenever, regardless of whether you have your laptop with you, as long as you have an internet connection. In this case, part of the setup process is authorising Dropbox to give CC access, since Dropbox needs to know that CC is acting on your behalf.

I'm pretty sure you wrote previously that you're using the wireless device connection. (And to be fair, that's the right one for you since you're dealing with a large number of files. The Dropbox connection is still a bit clunky in iOS, in that you download files one at a time.) That's why this authorisation step never happened.
