Question Couple easy questions???

First let me say that Calibre is the best, most supported piece of software that anyone could ask for. I love it.

Question 1.
That being said, I would like to make it my default ebook reader. I tried to do that but Calibre opens selected ebooks only in the html editor. ??? I know that I can goto the Add Books dialog to add a book, but I would like to be able to select an ebook within windows explorer and use the Calibre ebook reader to open it. Or perhaps a popup dialog to add it to Calibre's library? Right now, Adobe opens the file, lets me read, and only asks if I want to add it to its library when I exit. I would prefer Calibre.

Question 2.
I write science fiction novels and have a publisher. However, I send pre-release books out to my reader group for editing, and pre-release copies out for reviews. I would like to embed a special number into the file to identify it should someone break my confidence and leak a copy. How to do that? In the html editor?

Thank you all for your advice.

Use C:\Program Files\Calibre2\ebook-viewer.exe as your reader program.

I'll leave your other question for others; I don't know whether that's doable in the book editor.

1) When Calibre installed on Windows it created additional Menu items for the Viewer, Editor and Server. I think they were also available as choices on the OS 'Open With" menu (where you can choose to make this the TYPE default

2) You can place any HTML VALID code via the editor.
'Comments' are Valid
playing with 'visibility' (white on white, hidden, very small font) is iffy as not all devices play to YOUR wishes

make a 'finger print' (subtle inline code color shade that is not visibly different, a homophone word which still passes spell check) in different places depending on who gets the copy

It depends on what is in control.

#1: If you mean the default used by calibre when you View a book from within the Library Manager then it is a simple matter of choosing which formats calibre sends to its internal viewer and which it sends to the OS for it to deal with. Check out calibre's Preferences > Behaviors panel to find the list where you can make your choices.

#2: If you mean the default used by your OS, either when you double click on an ebook file in that OS's file browser or when you have calibre send the file to the OS to deal with, you have to configure your OS to pair each format with the desired application. The exact way to do this will vary from OS to OS and is not really a calibre issue.

  1. Embed a uuid in the files sent, maybe in the metadata (e.g. in an epub dc:identifier id="uuid_id" opf:scheme="uuid">uuid value</dc:identifier>). You can get uuids in bulk from here ==>> Online UUID Generator Tool. Save them to a csv file, and as they're used record the document and recipient names and date alongside the uuid.

  2. Put an invisible but unique (perhaps by varying the dimensions) watermark on the cover or other png image. If you find a bootlegged copy you can separate the watermark with Imagemagick, see last post in this thread ==> Conversion of PDF files to ZIP

If I understand correctly that you want windows to open the ebook with the calibre ebook reader thats not in your library, one of the easiest ways to do so is to choose an ebook is to pick a book, highlight it, then right click on it. You should get a pop up window that has an 'open with' option, then inside that, 'choose default program...'. From there, you can choose the ebook reader program as mbovenka pointed out from the calibre program directory. That's how I did it.
