Yes you do need ALF if the eBook has DRM.

Thanks. I'll have to read it on my iPhone/ iPad as I cannot get Alf and calibre to work on my mac. I've used it before on my old windows laptops without any issues.

Or I may download that awful adobe digital editions and read it on my nook simple touch.
