HELP: Adding a book that contains two novels to a series

I have the following book
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/40992.Shadow_Claw

Which contains booth book 1 and book 2 of The Book of the New Sun.

Is there a way to represent this in Calibre without having gaps in my series information?

Two possibilities:

I know this isn't ideal for many here, but I add the the book series and number a the front of all my book names so they sort together. For your example, in the Series column, I'd just put a 1, but in the Title it would be "series_name 01-02".

Another option is you could create empty records for the book 2, and just point to the combined book as the location of the book in the Description. At a glance, you'd see you have the series.

Another option is to split it into the two separate books.

If I was doing it for my library I'd probably split it. (I say that, but lately I often can't be bothered to do so anymore)

Or otherwise number it 1.2 and if I added the second volume the publisher offers number that 3.4, although I find that numbering system less than ideal since more and more series are having multiple shorts or novellas between books that might use those numbers (in a general sense, not this series in particular). Maybe 1.02 (& 3.04) instead of 1.2 of course either way this becomes a problem for series with a single novella between books where that would normally be numbered 1.5, etc.

I guess it depends what you're actually trying to do. For me, the only reason I care is so that I don't buy a standalone book I already have as part of an omnibus.

I number them for the first book in the omnibus, and tag it "Omnibus" and note which books they are in the top of the description. I have a colouring rule that changes their row colour, which is enough to remind me that they're there.

That's pretty much the way I handle it.

When I search for a book or story, I generally type the title in the search bar. if I've added the individual titles to the Description field, the search will find any omnibus edition that contains the title. With short story collections, I often open the book in a viewer, copy the TOC, and paste it into the description so that a search for a story name will find any collections containing it.
