Cannot Save Book to Device Memory

I added some new books to Calibre this morning. When I went on Calibre Companion to add them via content server, I get Cannot Save Book XXX to Device Memory. This is the same message I get for each book (with XXX being the name of the particular book). I updated Calibre, but changed nothing else. I restarted my computer and my Kindle. Content server connects just like always. I last added books with no problem on September 6.

I checked updates for Kindle and Calibre Companion. The books are still being saved to the SD card, which has space available.

I cannot add books by connecting to Calibre, as I have too many, and it disconnects after several minutes.

Can you tell me what I should check next?

Did you update calibre to 2.67? If so, that is the problem. There is a "regression" in that release that broke the content server. See here for some explanation.

If you haven't updated calibre then I need to see a CC debug log. How to send me one is described here. Please delete the multipie.co.uk address.

I tried connecting as wireless device. Everything goes fine, but when I try to sync, I get an error that the connection was forcibly closed, and my fire loses the connection.

Darn Windows 10. I will look to make sure the settings I put in to allow CC through are still there.

The usual cause for this is that Android is telling CC that storage is read-only. On SD cards this can happen "out of the blue" because Android gets confused.

My mail system (the free version of google apps) is currently down so I am not receiving messages. The debug log is set in the queue.

What folder on the SD card are you using? Are you using the Android/data/com.multipie ... one? If not then assuming I am right you might be able to recover by reselecting the folder in CC's Settings / Folders and formats. Navigate to the folder you are currently using. I *strongly* advise you to make a CC backup first.

Another option is to uninstall and reinstall CC. That sometimes works better then the reselection option. See How do I reinstall CC without losing all my book information? for more information.

I will check here manually from time to time until I start getting email again.

Chaley, I wonder if it is because I have too many books. I currently have 10080 on my fire, and wanted to add 15 more. I tried connecting as wireless device, and it does just what Calibre does when I try to connect by USB. It usually disconnects after about 5 minutes of updating the library. CC lets me update the library, but disconnects when I try and sync. Unfortunately, CC isn't letting me delete books, either, so I cannot delete as I go. I have about 5 books I have read, but I get unknown error when I try and delete.

I received the debug log and it supports your theory. However, I don't understand why you can't delete books.

I strongly suspect that you have run into the problem described in this FAQ: I have added a lot of books on an SD card and now downloading books takes forever. What do I do? Although the problem is posed in terms of "taking forever", it also exists in terms of an absolute limit on the number of files (books) that can exists in a single directory. Given an "average" length of book file names, that limit is easily hit as early as 9,000 files. You could be there. The fix is the one described in the FAQ.

What I don't understand is why CC can't delete a file. That makes little sense. I don't know if the fix described in the FAQ will work because it requires that CC can delete files. However, if you have a file manager program then you can delete a 4 or 5 files yourself, "freeing" space for CC. If after doing that you can send a file then we know what the problem is. You change the template and start resending books. You would then resend the deleted books after changing the template. Note that you don't need to resend *all* books, just enough (10 or so) to create enough space to store the folders.

My apologies for not being definite and clear. We are at the edge of what is "normal" behavior, and I simply cannot be more precise.

It isn't your problem I have so many books! My husband says I will be ready for the zombie apocalypse, but my fire needs batteries, and with so many books, it runs down pretty fast. I will give that fix a try.

if it's a full size SD card, then the read-only problem could be because of the switch. I have a mcroSD to SD adapter where the switch doesn't stay in place and when you insert the card, it moves enough to become read-only.

It is a micro SD. I did notice my Kindle updated right before this started happening.

I realize I broke it. I was so happy when I got all my books on it, I just kept going and going. I have a problem with that. I would just uninstall CC and reinstall, but I have books from 2 different computers and 2 different Calibre libraries on the fire.

I will let you know if I ever delete enough books so it acts differently. Unfortunately, ES File Explorer doesn't list files by date, so I can't mass delete all the newer ones, for example.
