Copying over USB has no effect on book listing
OK, I wrote all this and then discovered the solution as I was writing it. So I'm going to post this anyway so that I can answer my own question for any other poor souls out there who run into this...
I've tried sending the following to my new kindle 8, all without any noticeable effect except that the files show up fine on USB mass storage (all done over USB - I keep my kindle permanently in airplane mode - some of which I copied by hand into the documents folder, others sent using the latest 2.69 calibre):
The files don't show up in the list of documents on the kindle. I have the kindle set to display "ALL" and "ALL ITEMS". My last kindle (7, I think) didn't have this issue. I've tried rebooting the device. I've read everything I can find on this forum. So two questions / requests:
I suspect that some sort of reindexing / table of contents regeneration is supposed to be happening, and that that's not happening for me... |

Here is the problem. In order to display all items, instead of "ALL" being selected at the top left of the book listing (in the ALL | DOWNLOADED radio selection widget), you need to select "DOWNLOADED" instead.
Because that makes total sense. Ask amazon not me! ...but I'm guessing what's happening is (along the lines of): ALL displays books stored only on amazon's computers ("cloud") and also displays books stored both on amazon's computers and locally on the kindle itself (but NOT those that were not bought from amazon). DOWNLOADED displays books stored both on amazon's computers and locally on the kindle itself, and also displays books stored ONLY locally on the kindle itself (but NOT those that are only stored on amazon's computers). Hard for me to know for sure, partly because my kindle has everything local. |

ALL: All the items in your Amazon Cloud library.
DOWNLOADED: The items that have been downloaded to your Kindle. Amazon look at it from the viewpoint of the typical customer who buys books from them. |
