True "Classic" icon theme in 2.71

Is there a way to get the complete "Classic" icon theme in Calibre 2.71?

By default, when you install 2.71, the icon theme is changed to the new "Default". If you then change back to "Classic", it's mostly right, but a few icons (like Remove Books and Edit Book) are still the new versions.

Based on the contents of the "icon-theme.json" file and the PNG files in the Calibre config directory, there don't appear to be images for these at all.

I know I could create my own Icon theme, but that's a lot of work for a couple of forgotten icons. Also, I'd need the original icons, which would mean installing an older version of Calibre somewhere so I could grab them.

@nablstd - Kovid has acknowledge there are a couple of mistakes, I'm sure they'll be fixed in next release.

Meantime the attached zip contains all the icons from version 2.62. You can override individual icons by putting replacements (using the same name) in the %appdata#\calibre\resources\images\ folder, you may need to create it. The ones you're after are trash.png and tweak.png So copy them into that folder - don't copy them into the installation folder, if only because it's bad practice to mess with such folders.

Curious - I've seen reference to "the Create New Theme" feature, where do I find it.

It is complete. As of 2.71 the edit book and remove books buttons use different icons (that did not exist prior to 2.71) which is why you see icons from the new theme. You want to override those as well, simply override the files remove_books.png and edit_book.png in the calibre config resources/images/ folder.

That's exactly what I said. Those icons aren't actually the "Classic" ones, but are instead the new ones. That was my problem.

Thanks for this. Using it, plus changing the theme, plus creating my own, I learned a lot more about how things worked. It also turned out I didn't need it, because when I switched back to "Default", then back to "Classic", all the icons from before 2.71 were there, and named correctly so they worked.

Preferences->Miscellaneous->Create a Calibre icon theme

Once you do that, tell us where it saves the files, because it seems to finish creating, but I can't see where it put the file.

When you click the 'Create a new calibre icon theme' button it asks for a folder in %userhome% so I presume it puts in there.

As I said I was "Curious", I don't want to create one. The very notion of me creating an icon theme is laughable, as you can see here:-

Name:	1.JPG

Size:	18.5 KB

In the main I use keyboard shortcuts and the book list context menu, occasional use actions are in the Favourites PI

I never got asked anything...the process completed, and I have no idea whether it wrote a file or not.

I just pulled out "Process Explorer" from Sysinternals, and found that nothing was written. So, I ran "calibre-debug.exe -g" and then I got prompted for a filename to save to.

It's attached, and gives Calibre 2.71 and beyond the same look as before 2.71.

Reading the manual, Creating your own icon theme for calibre - the it appear that the only purpose of creating a 'theme' is should you want to make it available to the world at large via the Look and Feel->Change icon theme feature.

Quote:
You can upload that to the calibre forum at Mobileread and then I will make your theme available via calibre’s builtin icon theme system.
Otherwise whatever is in the %CALIBRE_CONFIG_DIR%\resources\images folder is your personal icon theme. If you install a published theme its icons are written to that folder, I don't know if they will overwrite anything that was already there.

Although I uploaded mine, I created it to have my personal preferences packaged up so that I can apply it in case a new install again messes up the "Classic" icons, or to apply to installs on new machines.

Please help. I need a step-by-step on how to go back to the previous icons (for some reason I'm having a really hard time seeing/distinguishing the new icons). I can't even find %appdata#\calibre\resources\images\ on my Windows 10 machine to start. I guess I can uninstall the current version and go back to one that I can see the icons better, but I hate to do that. Thanks for any help.

The directory you're looking for is probably C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\calibre\resources\images\

If you haven't ever tried to override any of calibre's defaults before (e.g. icons, jacket) then some of these subdirectories probably don't yet exist and you need to create them yourself. You should at least have the standard calibre config directory which is usually C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\calibre\.
