Kindle 1 not connecting to Store

It was working fine a few months ago, but lately it has been unable to connect to the store or run experimental browser. The signal strength is at 4 or 5 bars, once it appears to 'connect', which takes a few minutes. Maybe it needs a new battery? I have to charge it every couple of weeks even though I turn it off. But it still fails to connect when plugged in.

There are various diagnostic screens that are accessible from Settngs. 'Loop back test' fails for what that is worth. The 611 page shows 'Not Avail' for WAN Access statuses. Wonder if Sprint pulled the plug?

Anyway I thought I'd check to see if anyone has had the same issue with a Kindle 1, or lack thereof.

Didn't Microsoft recently update the root certificates on their servers, and require a firmware update on all devices to continue connectivity by both 3G and WiFi? That may very well be the cause of the problem; I suspect they didn't issue a firmware patch for the K1?

I seem to recall a few posters here having an update for their K1's back when Amazon was email nagging folks about updating.

I did the cert update awhile back (the first round of 'update your kindle emails' last year?) but not since this more recent one. The device has '1.2.1', as required, but perhaps there is a 'newer' 1.2.1 somehow. I'll try that, thanks! Need to find a (now) weird mini USB cable...

No go. The .bin file (very small) was removed after disconnecting the cable, and Update menu item remained disabled, as in "I already have this update". 5 bar signal near full charge, still getting 'unable to connect at this time, please try again later'.

Tried system reset. Still no luck. It takes forever to get bars (like 5 minutes), I think it may be issue with wireless provider, or provisioning in this geographic location. I'll try again from somewhere else. Maybe Amazon forgot to pay their Sprint bill.

But again: is there anyone here with a Kindle 1 that connects?

Not helpful to you, but my Kindle 1 *never* connected. I bought it refurbished, and the 3G/wifi never worked.

3G coverage was US-only and even now does not cover where I live. So I'm trying to connect from elsewhere. Kindle 1 did not have wifi.
