Calibre and Adobe Digital Editions on Windows XP

My father has an old pc with Windows XP 32 bit SP3. He would like to read ebooks on his computer, both DRM and DRM-free ebooks, so I'm going to install on his pc both Adobe Digital Editions and Calibre.

As for Calibre, if I understand correctly, I have to install version 1.48 because newer versions are not compatible with Windows XP.

As for Adobe Digital Editions, I could install one of the following versions: 2.0.1, 3.0 or 4.5.1. What version should I install? What version works best with Calibre 1.48 + the latest DeDRM plugin?

Thanks.

Correct, 1.48 is the latest Calibre that will install on XP. As for ADE, I'd go with 2.0.1. Later versions support a newer DRM version that's as yet invulnerable to Alf's magic. I haven't heard of any epub seller actually using that DRM, but better safe than sorry and 2.0.1 works just fine.

I've just setup my father's computer (Win XP SP3) with Calibre 1.48 and Adobe Digital Editions 2.0.1.

After installing ADE, all epub files were associated with ADE and showed the ADE file icon.

I quickly changed the default application for open epub files to Calibre E-book viewer, but something strange happened: now, when I double click an epub file, it regularly opens with Calibre, but its file icon is still the ADE icon.

How can I get rid of the ADE icon on epub files?

@Manosk try the XP option in here ==>> Rebuild or purge Icon Cache in Windows
