Book covers disappearing

So my Nook SimpleTouch decided to bite the dust. Just picked up a Kindle Paperwhite. Used Calibre to convert my books to AZW3 and transfer them over. Strangely, the book covers disappear after a few minutes.

Googling shows that this may be a known issue - anyone have any thoughts?

If I plug my Paperwhite into my computer and transfer the books over through Calibre the covers remain. If I transfer them over WiFi they don't stay.

Thanks. All my transfers have been from directly inside Calibre to the Kindle connected via USB. So, no joy.

Try to get cover from other sources (using Get Cover from Calibre). Sometimes, the cause is because of its size proportion.

Ok. I'll give that a shot. I reconverted everything to Mobi old, and all my covers have disappeared again this morning.

This has been a headache for many of us and I have been on amazon support several times. It does not only happen on Kindles but the respective kindle apps as well. What I have found is that is no amount of reconverting will do the trick.

Rather, what has worked for me, after the last tech support suggested all the data was not loading, was to resend the book through the kindle email address that is assigned to me, wait till the book fully downloads, wait some more, and wait some more before opening the file. Since then, my covers have stayed, but once in awhile I have to resend from calibre. this may or may not work for you, but I was tending to rush open the book to see if the cover would remain which only resulted further my issue.

As I much as I have loved reading on kindles in the past, the software platform leaves much to be desired.

Are you downloading straight from Amazon or are you converting?
If the first then yes use Amazon support, if the second then find a forum dedicated to the program you are using.

The software works for what it was designed to do.
It was not designed for the outliers and therefore their customer support cannot help.

Amazon advertises that Kindle supports manually loading Mobi and AZW3 files. The files display fine in other readers. Heck, they display fine on the Kindle...for a while.

Thus, there's a problem with the Kindle software. Which is why I came here to inquire.

Yes, I understand this. It says it will load mobi and azw3 files which I am assuming you can read. It does not say anywhere that it supports the cover files.
Now here is my question to you and maybe we can come up with an answer.
Where are you getting the files?
How are you sideloading?
Are you changing anything in the files?
Anything at all?
Let's just see if it is the software.

Prove to me that it is the software.

Let's go over everything you do.
I need to original location of files.
How you are getting them on your computer.
Everything you do to these files if anything.
Your operating system.
Exactly how you get them on your kindle.
If you know, where you are putting them on your kindle.

Let's eliminate the possibility of PEBKAC.

I don't have Cover problems. I just get them off Amazon. If they are needed when converting. Copy to PC then add when converting.

I have covers that are not showing either. And they came straight from Amazon.

I agree with you, as this was never a problem before with my Kindles. I have been on Amazon tech support and not once did they redirect me, but have kindly taken on the issue to attempt a resolution, as this problem has plagued not just my PW but kindle mobile apps as well with purchased and calibre conversions alike. Amazon support even had me send some of my Calibre files (all legally purchased and common domain content of course) to attempt to get to the root of the problem.

Snart, there is a known issue Amazon server end where if you convert and de-DRM the ebooks in Calibre that the cover images won't show, I'm thinking this is the same problem you have.

The way to fix that is to go into the SETTINGS and OUTPUT OPTIONS and then go down to the version you're exporting / converting to it might be Amazon AZW3 or MOBI, then there's a tick box for "Enable sharing of book content via Facebook, etc WARNING: Disables last read syncing". This is the part where it will add the cover image back into the book, but it only happens when you go to convert the book again. You can then right click on the book in Calibre and convert it, take the output file wherever it saves it and then transfer onto your Kindle.

The problem seems to have gone away - my covers are staying. I wonder if Amazon quietly updated the firmware/OS on the paperwhite.
