Kepub paragraphs won't break across pages

So I really like kepubs over epubs, except for one issue which I find annoying. Paragraphs will start on a new page if there is no room on the current page to display the entire paragraph. This leaves huge gaps at the bottom of a page. There are no widows or orphans referenced in the CSS, although I do have a kobo_extra.css file on the reader which has both widows and orphans set to 1. This particular book uses the Charis SIL embedded font--could that be the problem? I looked at another book with no embedded font, and it does not seem to have this problem. Thanks for any insight.

The KePub reader has serious problems to do with page breaks when the line spacing is set too low. How low is "too low" depends on which font is used, but Charis SIL is probably the worst case.

You can usually avoid the problem by increasing the line spacing a bit, but for Charis SIL you need to use such a wide line spacing that you are probably better off just using a different font.

The ePub reader doesn't have this problem, it can use any line spacing with any font.

Thanks, GeoffR. I already increased the line spacing for this book because I was having letters cut off at the bottom and top of the page, but I'll increase it even more to see if it helps with the paragraph problem. Ugh. I really, REALLY like kepubs for their faster response, the how-long-to-the-end-of-the-chapter feature, the image zooming, and the footnote popups, so I guess I may have to live with this problem or remove the Charis SIL font from my ebooks. Thanks again.

That is a bit different to what I've seen, so maybe there is something else going on.

I've seen two related page break problems in KePubs, one is where the paragraphs don't break across pages at all, which seems to happen at the lowest line-spacing settings. Increasing the spacing a little avoids that problem but leads to the second problem where the paragraphs break with a line split across pages. Increasing the line spacing further still and both problems go away.

Just increased line spacing again and now everything seems to be ok. Paragraphs will start at the bottom of the page and break to continue at the top of the following page, which is what I want. No cut-off letters either, so perfect. Line spacing is a little wide, but I can live with it. Thank you!
