Save reading positon across "devices"
I want to save my reading position in the Calibre Viewer across devices. I think the tool is mature enough to act as a reader in PC instead of other alternatives, like Fiction Book Reader (that syncs across devices but is very dirty in the task of respect the ebook format).
Currently I have my Calibre collection in a Dropbox folder (I know the dangers of that, I’m very carefully with the synchronization). I expected that if I save the reading position, it will be available in other devices, but seems no. Is it possible what I want? Perhaps a Feature Request if not? Thank, guys, in advance. @rfog - major re-development of the calibre viewer is currently underway as part of calibre version 3. The major thrust of version 3 is to address the issues with 'shared libraries' to which you allude.
So it is improbable that the current viewer will be enhanced a) because it's on it's deathbed, and b) especially not in a manner that might encourage the 'misuse' of version 2. If you Set up a calibre development environment then I understand its possible to preview what's coming in calibre 3. BR |

The new server is actually present in release builds (using the appropriate debug commands).
But the current E-Book Viewer saves bookmarks and current location inside the ebook (EPUB only) as well as in the configuration directory in the file "iterator.pickle". The configuration data saves it according to full filename so you will need to have the books in the same location on both devices... but as long as you sync that file, bookmarks will work across computers. The config data is canonical, but if it doesn't have anything for that book and the book is an EPUB it will check for the inside-the-EPUB backup. |

Be advised that there is no STANDARD for reading position.
Toss in the various book formats ![]() ![]() And you have given an excellent reason to developers to consume large quantities of alcoholic beverages, INSTEAD of attempting the improbable. |

Then I will wait for version 3.
Currently I'm switching back from Windows to iOS to "sofa thinging". Anniversary update is a forward step but the app ecosystem still sucks a lot. |
