Here's mud in yer eye ! - from the UK

Hi reader bods,

I found this forum recently when looking for info on e readers (funny how that happens, isn't it ?) The help and advice of the members here helped me make my e reader choice, which is the Iliad 2nd Edition, to arrive on monday. (Rubs hands in glee).

I am of severe visual impairment so the big screen is important to me, plus FBReader meaning you can have large fonts. It was a close call between the Iliad and the Cybook Gen3 but in the end the big screen and the wifi and the third party program support of the Iliad (I am a Bobby Fidget with tech gadgets - can't leave bugger all alone !) won the day. You never know - with third party apps someone may even fettle a screen reader such as Orca (part of the gnome desktop for linux) onto the Iliad which would make me even happier !

I am greatly looking forward to getting back into reading books, as since having eyesight issues which have worsened over the last twelve or so years it is one thing I have greatly missed. Reading on a laptop just isn't the same. You can't prop it on your chest when snuggled up in bed for a start (unless you want to be squashed abit )
And I am also looking forward to integrating the Iliad into my wifi networked home (after which I shall be ready to take over the world !! Mwhahahah ... ! Just kidding.) I see many possibilities with some third party apps.

Anyway - hi to all and thanks to those of you who have helped me out already. I'm off to the Iliad software forum to gather more information.

Hi Rachael and welcome to the Forum. Another advantage you will notice in your eBook reader over the laptop is no light shining directly into your eyes. Ambient light is much easier on the beepers than the backlight from a laptop.

Be sure and let us know how you like your reader once you get your hands on it.

Welcome Rachael .

Also, you can use e-ink readers in sunlight - which is great for relaxing outdoors, and enjoying our glorious summer weather .

No, you may NOT take over the world. Adrian the Gibbon is taking over the world, with help from a number of other very literate animals around here.

Welcome to the Mobileread Madhouse!!!

Sorry to hear about the eyesight thing, but glad that technology has at least provided a solution for reading.

(oh yeah, and welcome to the forum. happy reading on your new iliad...)

Um, I lived in the UK back in the mid-70's and, as I recall, the glorious summer was usually on a Tuesday. Okay, maybe into Wednesday morning.

What? Who said delusional? Or paranoiacs? They're out to get us, I tell you. Ahem. Sorry.

Welcome to the forum; remember the following rules:

1) Do not go into the Lounge
2) See rule 1.

Oh, and enjoy yourself.

Remember that there are some seriously brilliant genii on this forum, and with the Iliad there is the ability to modify the software, so you may have access to lots of help.

Personally I'd love to hear how you get on with the device.

You aren't paranoid if they are really out to get you.

Welcome Rachael, sounds like you're already fitting in with the group.
